Some of those houses are on the canals. Those gators will get into your pool. Eat your small dog.
Out west here, all we have are rattlesnakes and javelinas, coyotes, and scorpions. I still prefer here!
Good god. The biggest danger we have around here is the risk of stepping on a garden slug in your bare feet.
To be fair, the only one deadly to humans are rattlesnakes. And they can be anywhere! Scorpions only hurt, a lot. Same with black widow spiders. Javelins are large pigs, they’ll cause trouble, but they won’t eat you. Coyotes will eat your dog, but they are skittish around humans. I did see a bobcat in the city once! They generally leave humans alone, too.
Hmm…maybe the American southwest does sound scary! I never looked at it that way before. 
I’m still more scared of gators. They run FAST! And they will kill you given the chance.
