My school, in its infinite wisdom, decided to spend taxpayer money to construct a series of poles and wires to be used as part of their PE curriculum. So…there I am, perhaps 30 feet off the ground, attached to a harness and asked to walk across a wire while holding dangling ropes for balance, and I discover that I am terrified of heights.
There are several tricks that the teacher wants us to do, but I dread going up there every time. Does anyone know of any ways to overcome this fear?
I think the easiest way is just to look straight ahead and move to the end. Don’t think about anything else but getting the job done. This worked for me with rappelling in Basic Training.
Or you can make up an excuse to sit this one out.
The trick that worked for me was concentrating on the fact that nothing will go wrong. You have the ropes there for balance, so just pretend you’re walking across a wire six inches off the ground, and go!
You’re wearing a harness, so the worst that can happen is you’ll fall, and get what is basically a free low-drop bungee jump out of the deal. Things like this aren’t difficult if you remember that the worst-case scenario is actually fun!
