Just a reminder that if you see some serious typo after the five minute window, you can always email a moderator to fix it. Like typing “now” when you meant “not,” say.
I have another “feedback” or “question”. Call it whatever is best.
I don’t think it rates a new thread. But here it is:
Am I correct in the assumption that the default order of posts within a thread is “oldest first”. But the order of threads shown within a forum is “newest first” and there is no choice about that.
It’s funny, but I’m guessing that just doesn’t cause any problems. But, doesn’t anyone ever explain this makes them feel strange when looking at a list of threads then a list of posts when one is “front to back” while the other is “back to front”?
I am always confused by these two orders but no one else ever seems to be.
It’s hardly a big deal, but I just thought I’d like to hear if you have anything to say about this.
Thank you.
If you want you can change the order of the posts by clicking on the “Last Post” button in the threads views, and it’ll show the last thread at the top with the newest thread at the bottom, but that just feels sorta weird for me. But yeah, you can change the order of the threads if you like in a forum.
I’m just used to the newest threads at the top of the pile, as the older threads then just go to the bottom and I can click on page 2, 3, 4 etc as I read through them.
When I’m **in **a thread, I tend to read the thread I just read down like I’m reading a book, with the newest message at the bottom, and then if there’s another page, I just click to it and continue to read top to bottom, but different strokes for different folks I guess.
I see.
Very interesting. OK. Thank you.
Hello again.
I was going to make another post telling you about this wonderful feature I know of on another board I use. It enables me to search for all threads in which I’ve made a post under “Quick Links”.
But, then I see you have a feature called “Save Search Preferences” under the Search tool, and that does exactly what I want to accomplish the same thing. Now I can come in and with one click, I can see every thread in which I’ve made a post.
That is just perfect!
Thank you!

Okay, so I had to go look up ninja edit to know what that meant. Google is your friend.*

Being a moderated board with accounts to post helps. Abusing the feature can get you banned. Still leaves some threads a mess. But yes, general discussion boards with wide viewership draw in the widest range of participants, including conspiracy theorists, apologists for random quackery, and any number of people who do not qualify as “adults”.

There’s also a “subscribe” feature that will list every thread you post in in your user control panel so you can easily find them. Not that I’m using it.
Google is your friend. Urban Dictionary is your friend. The internet is your friend. Then why does my friend hate me?*

**** No, I’m not smoking anything. Why do you ask?
Easier yet:
[ol]
[li]Go to your User Control Panel (the “User CP” link in the bar at the top of the page). [/li][li]Select “Edit Options” from the menu in the sidebar.[/li][li]Scroll down to “Default Thread Subscription Mode” and change it to “No Email Notification”[/li][li]From then on, clicking on the “User CP” link will show you a list of all threads you’ve posted to that have new posts in them[/li][/ol]
Welcome aboard, by the way.
Gary,
Thank you very much. I was not aware of that feature and it sure does make things much easier.
As it turns out, I was mistaken in my belief that I could use that “Save Search Preferences” to help me accomplish the same thing. Unless I was mistaken, it didn’t help me do what I wanted.
I was getting so frustrated with having to check for my threads every time I logged into this boarad that I was about to write an AutoHotkey macro to do that for me.
So, thank you very much indeed!
You are quite welcome. There are many little “hidden” tips & tricks on this message board, and people are often shy about asking questions. If there’s something that seems difficult or impossible to do, don’t hesitate to ask in this forum (ATMB). We’re all about fighting ignorance, and we all have some ignorance to fight!
I’d say there’s no such thing as a stupid question, but as you spend more time on the SDMB, you’ll find that we have a few members that are capable of coming up with them.
