I have liked Social Distortion since I first heard them in Grad School. I have seen them a few times at Street Scene.
I’m sold on the Mike Ness solo albums!
I have a couple of mp3’s, but haven’t listened to either of the albums in their entirety.
I’ll pick them both up this weekend for sure.
If you play Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell REALLY FUCKING LOUDLY while driving, your car does the whole “jump to lightspeed” thing.
Do it! OneCentStamp and I highly recommend them.
Absolutely. I don’t know if I’ve stroked your musical ego on this board before, but I think you are definitely one poster who I always perk up and pay attention to when it comes to good music, or musical tastes that seem to parallel my own.
And to stroke their egos - Snooooopy, woodstockbirdybird, and BurnMeUp also come to mind immediately, but there are others. Apparently I can add OneCentStamp, WordMan, and Cluricaun to the list.
I’m bobbing my head with a kick-ass grin now that I’m thinking of the song “I’m in Love w/My Car”.
Reporting from the front lines: I am here to state definitively that eggs, cereal and getting your kids to finish their homework the morning it is due are all best accompanied by Bad Luck, Don’t Think Twice and a few other gems.
“Dad - who is that?”
“Social D”
“They rock”
“Yes - yes they do”
Another front line report comes courtesy of my girlfriend, she of the only really digging on Justin Timberlake and Paul Simon musical tastes. Because of this thread I was burning some CD’s last night to take on vacation since I don’t like risking originals in rental cars in Florida, and Social D managed to figure heavily into the playlists. As she was coming upstairs to go to bed she stuck her head in the den and asked what I was doing:
“Burning a few CD’s to take on vacation next week.”
:dubious: “What is this that’s playing? I really like this.”
“That’s Social Distortion baby”
:dubious: “That’s a weird name for a band, but this is alright, put some more of that on there.”
“That’s not a weird na…hey, where are you going? Good night!”
Weird name for a band. Hrumph. She’ll be lucky if I don’t just bring Darkthrone CD’s instead.
Play Transilvanian Hunger for her and she’ll be begging for Social D by halfway through the first song.

Old 97’s does a great cover of “Ball and Chain” on their Alive and Wired album.
I’ll have you know that this thread inspired me to acquire a representative Social D discography that I’m listening to right now–I’m amazed at how many songs I actually recognize from radio play and how consistently good the band is. Tight, toe-tapping, interesting–just all around rocking music. I’ve had the shuffle on for about three hours now and I haven’t heard anything I don’t like. This will definitely get burned for the car, thank goodness for stereos that play mp3s! Thanks for the tip, I’m sold.
Goes off to find solo albums, yeehaw!
Aw shucks, thank you! You’re another rare rockabilly fan, correct?
Correct! Wanda Jackson, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Bill Haley, etc. and lots of old stuff. But lots of new stuff, rockabilly revival, psychobilly, etc. - Stray Cats/Brian Setzer, Rev. Horton Heat, The Cramps, The Meteors, Necromantix, The Misfits, HorrorPops, and so on.
Hell yeah, I like almost all of them, but I’m not familiar with the Meteors or Necromantix, aside from their reputations. I’d definitely list Social Distortion on any list of rockabilly “hybrid” bands, or at least artists that rockabilly fans should check out.
If you like Wanda Jackson, try Josie Kreuzer and Kim Lenz – both newer rockabilly hell-kittens (at least new and cool in the late '90s/early '00s).
I love Social Distortion! I’ve seen them twice at the Fillmore in Denver (and got paid for it!). I’d never heard any of Mike Ness’ solo stuff, though, so I bought the album off iTunes. It rocks! Thanks for the suggestion.
I have a few, mostly covers (I Fought the Law, Folsom Prison Blues) as well as Don’t Think Twice.
I don’t know why I never bothered to acquire the full solo albums. I am SO glad I did.
I am loving everything I have listened to tonight.
Another big thank you! And I’m definitely on the Josie Kreuzer and Kim Lenz suggestions.
Yeah, I’m still stuck on Social D. Just listened to Angel’s Wings acoustic version on You Tube. Genuis.
Not the video though…
Saw them live with The Ramones in the mid 90s. A memorable pair of bands and a historical show. I’ve turned many people onto Social D over the years.
