As for the OP (I have been lurking since the first post:)), it’s a tough situation, one thinkfully I’ve never been around for despite having had many many cats grace my home (one of whom famously got lodged in the chimney), including an unspayed female at one point who was a veriatable kitten-factory…don’t feel guilty, you’re doing what you feel must be done and I’m sure that the amount of love you show your cat will be the true test of just how good a pet owner you are (and from the sounds of it, you’re a damn good pet owner).

I like songbirds, too… but should I stop a cat from killing them, especially if I know it’s going to eat it?
Treating animals well requires respecting their natures, and that includes the negative aspects as well as the good. Predation, accidents, and starvation are the natural controls on animal populations. Why do you think cats and dogs have so many offspring at a time?
One might also argue that the homeless amongst us are in fact living in the proud tradition of the ‘nature’ of the great apes; living off the land as best they can, braving the elements and of course, if they die from starvation, disease or exposure, that’s ok because they were living naturally.
Wonder how many of the homeless would go on record as saying ‘hey! I actually rather like this lifestyle, so you can take your offer of a home and family, regular food and drink and clean clothes and shove em up your ass!’?

Um, TVAA, cats and dogs are naturally predators, not prey. Why on earth should you expect other animals preying on them to be a good form of population control? Time to lay down the pipe, son.

Yes, you should stop it if you can. Many native songbird populations are endangered because they are being killed by non-native cats. Feed the cat some kibble and keep it inside if it is going to be killing birds. Take it to a shelter if it doesn’t have an owner.
Update…
Just so you all know, Aries is doing wonderfully. I couldn’t pick her up until yesterday because of some family issues, but I went to see her Saturday, the day after her surgeries. She went through it with flying colours and everyone there fell in love with her.
She was her old self when we picked her up. Lots of snuggles and kisses for me. Obviously she wasn’t too mad at me. When we got her home, she followed me around, and wouldn’t leave my side. She even slept on my pillow all night last night. Her belly is healing nicely, barely a scar visible already. Lasers are wonderful things. She is walking well, a little stiff after a nap. She is using her paws like she always has. There is no need for a post-op visit. Everything is dissolvable.
Just to clarify…
Our cat room is a spare 8ftx8ft room that we’ve converted into a little kitty sanctuary. It has 2 windows with hammocks so she can bird and squirrel watch, a cat spa, litter, dry food (soft food is served in the kitchen) toys, etc.

You are the one who suggested dealing with unwanted pet populations through predation. If you’re also against releasing them into the wild, what WOULD you do with the thousands of kittens and puppies that will result from no spaying or neutering, which you are ALSO opposed to?
Oh, I see now. You mean for them to be killed by predators in the comfort of their own homes. That clears it all up.
