Feigning Death?

Throughout literature and movies, stories have been told in which someone takes a drug that causes them to slip into a deathlike state for some amount of time. The classic example of this is, of course, Romeo & Juliet. Does such a drug exist or is it just something made up to serve the purposes of a story. If it does exist, what real-world medicinal purposes does it serve?

A drug? Not likely. More of a literary device.

OTOH Cryogenic preservation is Big Bu$ine$$. Make$ money for the provider$.
The cryogenically preserved individual pay$ up front and is not likely to recover from the experience!

A backwoods sherriff took a friend to a country church where they were have a 'raising from the dead," Walked in a while before the apointed hour, strode down the aisle and asked if the ‘corpse’ was really dead. The answer being in the affirmative, he pulled out his police special, aimed it at the heart and said loudly, “Well if he’s dead now, a bullet in the heart won’t make any difference.”
At that the “corpse” jumped out of the casket and made a hasty exit via the side door.
Good thing the “corpse” hadn’t been put in a suspended state.

I think there’s a drug that causes the human heart to beat at such a low rate that you’re on the border of death, but I’ve only heard of it, I have no cite.
