That’s what I thought. Butler being the most junior member of the team, others who have put in their time would be first in line for any of Feinstein’s committee assignments. Butler is more likely to get one of the vacancies opened by people moving to other committees.
Never mind-wrong thread, I think.
actually, I know Butler as she was the head of the SEIU chapter in Los Angeles County after the creator of the original IHSS union was caught misusing funds (he had a TV production hobby and ran out of money for it at some point and the government took it over for 2 years she was elected and it merged with the seiu …
Occasionally she answered the phone and personally helped my aunt fix some problems she was having with the county …very nice and attentive lady

He has the same chances any Republican has in California in the current climate: slim and none, and slim just left town.
Republicans have a significant problem in running for statewide office. We’re a deep blue state (save for some lightly populated areas) and if the Republican runs on the current MAGA platform they are dead to the majority of the voters, but if they run towards any kind of moderation, they will be kicked out of the Republican Party.
I remember him positively from when I was a kid (he lived in our neighbourhood, and was an acquaintance of my parents). He seemed like a really nice guy, but a LOT of people I remember as really nice from 20–30 years ago have changed for the worse now. I imagine the name recognition will help him a lot, but I don’t know that it could help him enough.
Well stated. The litmus test for any Republican running for any office in CA, statewide or local, is simply their position on the 2020 Presidential election. Ask them if it was fair and legitimate, and if Joe Biden won. If they say yes to one or both, then Democrats in CA would at least give them a listen (to see if there is more MAGA there), and if they say no to either, then they are a turn-off to the majority of voters (except locally - they can still win there in the non-coastal/non-urban areas with the “stolen election” baloney).
A 1989 Sports Illustrated article on Steve Garvey’s self-described “midlife disaster” . He might still be a nice guy overall (he certainly had charisma) and to be fair to him he seems to have stabilized his family life somewhat since, but the bloom left the rose as far as family values some decades ago.
Wow. We moved away from Southern California a couple of years before this, and I have never followed sports, so I didn’t know about any of that!
Yeah. One of my FB “friends” has MAGA followers. When I pointed out that the GOP ran a total crazy loser carpetbagger in 2016 vs Newsom, and they coulda ran a moderate like Schwarzenegger, several replied that a moderate Republican is just as bad as a Democrat. . But of course it was our fault we voted for Newsom (but the GOp did not give any sane voter a real choice)
Can a Republican win a statewide race with 0% of the Giants fan vote?
Don’t be so sure about that. I remember a Giants TV commercial for the season after he got traded to the Padres, and one of the Giants players on it told the viewers, “Don’t boo that nice Steve Garvey!”
But seriouisly, when was the last time the Republican Party invested anything in a California Senate candidate? I can’t remember the last time I saw a TV commercial for a Republican for a California Senate seat, and even the Democrats realize this as the ones for Democrats running for Senate tend to be few and far between as well. It was enough of a surprise in 2022 that a Republican even qualified for the November election; in the previous two Senate races (2016 and 2018), both of the final two candidates were Democrats.
And, I dunno if Good ol Garvey is MAGA enuf for them to back.
Needs to be red enough for MAGA but blue enough for California.
That’s a tough line to walk.
That said, Dems simply cannot afford to be lazy on this and assume they are a shoe-in.
I hate to be that guy (but I am that guy), it’s “shoo-in”.
And while it’s true that hubris often leads to ruin, you don’t want to waste resources where they aren’t needed either. There’s a balance. Hopefully they are competent enough to find it.
I should have known better. My GF is a big language nerd (which I say in the most affectionate way)…I will not be sharing this thread with her.
I agree but this is the best shot republicans will have at that seat. It’s been out of reach for ages. Even if it is still a long shot, this is their best chance to scoop it up and may put effort into it. Dems should be watching for that.
A populist, then. Heck, there were people who waffled between Trump and Sanders.
I think I missed the Trump/Sanders election.
Lotta states have open primaries, and you can pick which one you care more about. I spoke with people who backed both Trump and Sanders, and debated which one to vote for in the primary.
Loopy? Low information? Single issue? Dumb AF? Rebels without a Clue?
populists. probably read too many Russian messages on Facebook.
