My cat is a diabetic - he was very heavy his whole life, but lost about 5 pounds when he got sick. He was very lethargic with weak back legs - the vet diagnosed him several months ago. His energy level improved, but then plateaued. After a while, it didn’t seem to improve much, so my mom dropped his insulin dose by half. Now he is much more energetic and affectionate, more like his old self.
Is this healty, or is the poor thing on a 24 hour sugar high?
You need to answer a couple of questions:
- Is your cat drinking excessively? If yes, he isn’t regulated.
- Is your cat peeing excessively? If yes, he isn’t regulated.
- Is your cat hungry all the time? If yes, he probably isn’t regulated.
- Is your cat losing weight again? If yes, he isn’t regulated.
If he isn’t regulated, then he needs a glucose curve to find out if he needs a different insulin dose, a different insulin type or a different insulin administration frequency.
There is also the possibility that he isn’t diabetic anymore (which would certainly explain why he might be listless on insulin and feeling better with less insulin).
It is not smart to make your own insulin dose changes when it comes to feline diabetes. If you really want to know where your cat is with his disease, you need to have your vet recheck him (and he may have to stay all day for a proper glucose curve to find out).
If you have a veterinary question and you want to ask a real veterinarian, you can use the Ask the Vet boards at www.vin.com/petcare
It’s free.
Note: This post war composed by my veterinarian wife, who does not frequent these boards (as I do). Thus the link above, which are boards that veterinarians (including my wife) regularly answer.
