I read a lot, and about many different things. One thing that stood out was a claim that, although crime and violent crime rates have dropped substantially, female criminality was increasing.
Now, I do not know this to be true. Obviously these things depend on place and circumstances. But are these things true in some places? Why might this be?
If this is considered more of an opinion thread, please move it, but actual data is always preferable.
With the recent covid stuff, our female incarceration rate rose also. Drug offenses, petty theft, domestic violence. It pulled a lot of those out on parole/probation back in. We figure it’s the stress of the pandemic/isolation/money worries/loss of job/stuck with partner/parents
It was in a series of book chapters where they were stating that the world is generally becoming a better place, with lower rates of poverty and difficulties obtaining food for more people, but most people are under the impression it is getting worse because of a never-ending supply of bad news and much increased awareness of things that occur. As a counterpoint, they pointed out things that are getting worse like climate and global democracy ratings. And this was also mentioned in passing, which was briefly rationalized by increasing opportunity, more women in the workplace, changing mores and increasing equality. However, they mentioned no statistics. They did not name places where it may be true - so I am loathe to accept it without more evidence.
I can see Covid being a factor, supposedly 25-50% of people are severely stressed or depressed. The book was published in 2021 and is unclear but since Covid is not much discussed might not be a factor in their calculus. As always, Qadgop makes a lot of sense.
This sounds to me like a good theory for why. As women get more opportunity and ability to succeed in a broad range of activities in general, there’s no special reason criminality would be excepted, is there?
