We need some help…looking for a movie about conformity…easy we know…but then the hard part…it must be directed by a female. It’s for a film study for 17 year olds and this is the criteria. We know you film buffs will be able to help us out. Thanks in advance
I think I should probably make myself a bit more clear. I’m a teacher of a high school class and I need something that fits the criteria but they will be able to relate to
I’d recommend Bend it Like Beckham. Directed by a woman, should be relevant to 17-year-olds, as that is the age of the main characters, and it’s all about conforming, or not conforming. Good movie too.
“But I’m A Cheerleader”, directed by Jamie Babbit who despite the androgynous name is in fact a chick.
About a girl whose parents send her to a sexual reorientation camp, despite the fact that she keeps denying she’s a lesbian. Decent movie, kinda funny. Don’t remember any real naughty bits, but I could be wrong on that, you might want to check it out.
I hesitate to recommend *I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing*because of the strong lesbian element in the film which might not sit too well with your school administration. But it’s a cool film.
How about “A League of Their Own”, directed by Penny Marshall? The women in the film chose to compete in a traditionally male sport of baseball at a time when gender roles were stricter. (And at the same time, Geena Davis’s character of Dottie Hinson chose to quit playing ball to assume a traditional role as a wife and mother.) Also, look at the Wikipedia category of female film directors for inspiration.
Edited to add that I hope the OP returns to let us know which film was chosen.
