female growth (height) question

Do girls stop growing (height) after they get their period? My cousin hit me with that one; I’ve never heard anything about this. Is it true?

No cite, but no, they don’t.

This is anictodal, but I was 5’5" when I got my peirod, and I’m about 5’9" now. So no, I guess not.

No, and this is probably truer than ever- it seems girls are getting their periods at a younger and younger age. Growth for females is supposed to be over at about age 18, they’ve all had their periods for at least a few years by then.

There’s a correlation between early onset of estrogen production, and reduced height in females. Can’t find corroboration on line just now, but here’s a bit on the use of estrogen to inhibit growth in pre-teens.

I stopped growing in 6th grade at 5"1 (I’m 5 ft., now) My period didn’t happen until the summer after 8th grade. So I did the grow thing backward.

ON AVERAGE, girls get a growth spurt shortly before the onset of puberty. They will grow some afterwards, too, but not a lot. In comparison, boys GENERALLY grow quite a bit in the years following puberty, which usually occurs later for boys. Look at any classroom of 7th or 8th graders. The girls are mostly larger, taller, and generally more mature in just about every way, whereas most of the boys are still children. Look at the same group in 5 years and you would still recognize most of the young ladies, but the guys are invariably a great deal taller, and many will continue to grow taller still for a few years. Obviously there are individual variations related to numerous different causes.

I’m 47 now (6 foot tall female), but when I was younger I was very worried about being too tall, and was teased constantly about it. I was 5’ 10" in 6th grade. I read a magazine article, talked with my parents, and got medical intervention for my height. The basic dope is that as you reach your mature height, the joints in your fingers close up. They can X-ray your hand and determine what your adult height will be. Earlier onset of menstruation does slow your rate of growth (not totally stop it). They can prescribe hormones to make your period start at a younger age than it would otherwise. So basically I took hormones at age 11-12, got my period, and grew to 6’ instead of (supposedly without hormones) 6’ 3".

As far as political correctness goes, I’m not sure how I feel about the issue, but at the time this issue was extremely important to me personally, and I’m sure my teenage years and twenties were happier because I didn’t perceive my height as making me a major misfit.

I reached my adult height of 5’7" in the eighth grade, got my period shortly before ninth grade. My mother, on the other hand, started menstruating at age nine, but later grew to the same adult height as I; in fact, she’s mentioned having a growth spurt shortly after she went to college.

I’m female. I grew gradually and steadily over the years, I started by being of average height throughout my grammar school years, and my early high school years. I grew gradually until about 20 or 21 and by that time, I had reached a height I used to consider tall: 5’9. Menstruation started at 15.

I should add that my mother and sister are short: My sister is 5’2, and I’m a tad taller than my father. I think my father might have been taller but he had a diet low in protein during some crucial years as a youth.

I think the late puberty had a lot to do with my height. The funny thing is that all throughout my youth I yearned terribly to be tall; I was obsessed with it. I measured myself constantly and took cod liver oil because I’d heard somewhere that it would help you grow taller. I knew a girl as a freshman in high school who was taller than everyone else, she was 5’9, and I admired her height. Who would have thought that I would gain her height? I think I would have been very happy if I were even taller.

I also heard somewhere that birth length can give an indication of adult height, and I think I was a little bit long as a baby.

There is a formula for predicting adult height, but it isn’t related to birth length. It’s based on height at a specific exact age. Unfortunately, I don’t remember what that age is! Birth height and weight are not good predictors because both are very much dependent on things like how large the mother’s uterus is to begin with, the exact time of gestation (which varies quite a bit from person to person), and the mother’s nutritional status.

As mentioned girls can grow after the onset of menarche around 13-15, but to the extent they do (if at all) it’s typically at a much reduced rate compared to the rate boys can continue to grow past 13-15 and into their late teens. My 16 1/2 year old daughter is about 5-10 and pretty much achieved her full height around the time her period came. She might have grown an additional inch at most post menarche. Her younger brother who at 12 is exactly the same height she was at his age is likely going to be 6’2" to 6’4" by the time he finishes growing.

My periods started when I was 9, and I was 4’10". Within a year I grew to 5’2" and never grew any more. I am now 45 and 5’1". Periods stop your growth, and when you approach menopause it starts again - backwards!

Of course they don’t stop growth! I started when I was 12 and like, 5 feet. About a year later I shot up about 4.5 inches.

Grew a little more after I got married (at 21), too.
