Female Monastics in Non-Christian Religions

There are Christian monks. There are Buddhist monks.

There are Christian nuns. There are Buddhist… ???

Are there female monastics in Buddhism? If so, are they called “nuns”?

How about in other religions? Are Christianity and Buddhism the only religions with monastic traditions? If there are others, do they have females?

Yes, there are Buddhist nuns. There are also Hindu, Islamic, and Jain monks, apparently. It doesn’t appear that there are any Islamic nuns, but the other religions seems to make provisions for women in their monastic traditions. If you have ever seen the “Whirling Dervishes”, those are Islamic monks, of a sort, although they differ somewhat from what we would consider a monk; for one thing they do not line in a “monastery” setting.

There is a good article on Wikipedia . It will probably answer any other questions you might have.
