Fertilizing spring bulbs

When should I fertilize my spring bulbs? I’ve always done it in very early spring, with mixed results. Would it be better if I did it in the fall? How about both?

I always put slow release fertilizer (like Osmacoat) in the hole and mix a little dirt with it. Then I add the bulb. Seems to work for me…

Their active growing season is in the spring – that’s why you should leave the foliage until it has died back on its own; the bulb is forming the flowers for the next season at that time.

I’m not a big fan of fertilizing as a separate chemical step – you’re better off enriching the soil. Add a layer of compost either now or in the spring (or both) for the best long-term results.
