I’m surprised by the posters who find Darth Maul to be cooler than Palpatine. Darth Maul is certainly not someone I’d want to stumble upon in a dark alley - but a man with a rifle, the skill to use it, and fifty yards between himself and Darth Maul would not be in much danger at all.
Palpatine, not so much. Even shooting him would be a terrifying prospect - what diabolical mechanisms has he left in store to avenge his death? If Darth Maul were angry with me, I’d learn to shoot. Were Palpatine angry with me, I’d learn to kill myself painlessly, and thank my lucky stars I’d had the warning I needed to avoid whatever fate I’d suffer at the Emperor’s hands.
If lasers are largely ineffective against force users, I’m not sure what a rifle would do. Since a gimped Vader was still able to force choke an underling across space, I wouldn’t count on 50 yards keeping me safe from a healthy Sith.
Maul was cool, but as most point out, he was underused and undeveloped.
Vader seemed seriously gimped. He only had a partial body, and it seemed to take effort just to breath. He managed a back flip while fighting Luke, but it wasn’t even so much a back flip as he just levitated himself.
The only thing Vader has going for him is he can command ships and fleets. Generalship seems like Jedi 101 training. But, we never saw if Maul could command a fleet or not. Personally I don’t see why not. He was certainly competent enough to take a ship across the galaxy and track down Qui-gon and Obi-wan.
He can take on two Jedi! That’s just coolness.
His death was contrived. Sheesh, I"m not a Jedi but if someone tried to do a flip over my head while I was holding a light sabre, I wouldn’t be the one chopped in two.
Yes, but is Il Palazzo a villain? I know he wants to conquer the world, and all that stuff that villains typically want, but since Excel Saga s seen from the point-of-view of the members of ACROSS, they are heroes, trying to save a corrupt world, and not villains. I suspect that Rikdo Koshi is the true villain, even though he dies in the first episode. (Ridko is the author of the manga, as well as being a significant character).
And I missed the edit window, sorry, but I wanted to add that Darth Maul was really cool. I do love the drunken reviewers take on the Star Wars movies, though.
For the posters saying that you need a back story or character development or whatever to be cool, I don’t agree. You just need a certain cool style. You don’t need a lot of dialogue either. That’s why Johnny Tightlips from the Simpsons is cooler than Fat Tony.
I hate to say anything good about this movie but the Fighter henchman in the Dungeons and Dragons movie was several levels of cool above Jeremy Irons character. At least they tried with him even if they only managed to get him to the level of “cheesy 80’s stereotype of an evil fighter”. The evil wizard, on the other hand, looked like a middle manager. (Jeremy Irons, despite his reputation as a ham, was, IMHO, phoning it in and didn’t make his character stand out from any other random character in a random modern movie.)
The city council with it’s costumed rangers is the “heroes”. It’s just turning both groups on their head so that the bad guys end up accomplishing mostly good and the bad guys end up accomplishing mostly bad.
Hell, just to go back to Star Wars - Vader was much cooler when he had NO back story beyond being an ex-Jedi who killed Luke’s father. The more we learned about him, the less cool he was.
see heres the thing, after whats his face died and they zoomed in on his light sabre while the other whatshisface paced around outside all pissed I had this flash of insight where as soon as the doors opened whatshisface#2 was going to force grab Whatshisface#1’s light saber and then him and DM were going to duke it out big time, one guy with one double saber and the other with 2 fighting Florentine. that shit would have been EPIC. that nonsense where DM stood there and let himself get killed made me think of Obi Wan in the first flick when Vader killed him, “I will come back stronger” or whatever he said.
While an argument could be made about Jayne, Mal doesn’t belong in this thread, since it if for villains. Mal was not always a nice guy, but he wasn’t a villain.
