FIFA Women's World Cup 2015

I thought Colombia would tire, but they’re still all over the French. This is a fun match.

ETA: Except for the fail on the handball call. The fix is in for Colombia!

I didnt know they were and what is that??

This is a really good match. Go Colombia!!

The refing is horrible; the match is brilliant.

Wow,what a great match. Women GK a bit different than the men.

Go Cafeteras!!!

That was awesome. The French keeper’s Neuer impersonation failed to impress at the end, however.

Agreed. The French werent ready mentally to play against a team who wouldnt bow down to their brilliance. They wouldnt adapt tactically. Love the way the Colombia plays.

It’s not exactly an official thing–it’s a Men-in-Blazersism, so if you don’t listen to their pod, subscribe to their newsletter, and/or follow their twitter, it’s not something you’ll see. Here’s an example: x.com

ETA: That said, among at least the Premier League fans, the MiB are pretty influential. The US National Team / American Outlaws crowd isn’t exactly the same, but there’s going to be plenty of overlap, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see it catch on at least a little bit.

If you’re playing patient, possession football, it would help if you actually possessed the ball. The US had a big edge in time of possession if the first half, 59%-41%. They weren’t creating tons of chances. The weren’t keeping the ball away from the US. I don’t see domination here.

For anyone interested and awake the USA under 20 mens team plays Serbia in a quarterfinal match in 30 minutes. The first two games, BRA v POR and MALI v GER ended with penalties.

Its on over the air Telemundo…a Spanish language station.

Thanks for the heads-up. It’s also on Fox Sports 1, getting ready for extra time now after a scoreless 90 minutes.

What a long and great day for footie…both of todays WWC matches on Fox (Col v Fra; Eng v Mex) were epic and draining. Then the mens under 20 on Telmundo (Bra v Por and USA v Ser) are going to what looks like PKs. So draining. So much fun. So much beer.

Hope USA can hang on through PKs…Germany lost Brazil won even though they were horrible through 120 minutes.

Horrible PK…

Wooo miss for Serbia

So we’re through two matches in the group stages. Here are the current standings:

Group A:
Canada 4 (+1)
China 3 (+0)
Netherlands 3 (+0)
New Zealand 1 (-1)

Canada vs. Netherlands, China vs. New Zealand 7:30 ET Monday

Most likely scenario is that Canada and China will both win, and end up 1-2, leaving Netherlands in 3rd with 3 points. But this is one of the most even groups. Every team controls their own destiny, I think, at least as far as advancing to the next round is concerned. (New Zealand might need to win by 2 goals.)
Group B:
Germany 4 (+10)
Norway 4 (+4)
Thailand 3 (-3)
Ivory Coast 0 (-13)

The most straightforward group. Nearly a certainty that Germany will beat Thailand and Norway will beat Ivory Coast, with Germany ending up #1 due to goal differential. Games are Monday at 4:00.
Group C:
Japan 6 (+2)
Switzerland 3 (+8)
Cameroon 3 (+5)
Ecuador 0 (-15)

Hard to see Ecuador rallying to beat the defending champs, and Japan only needs a draw. So Japan wins, and then Switzerland and Cameroon play for the #2 spot. A draw is actually great for both, as Cameroon ending up 3rd in the group with 4 points and a +5 goal differential almost certainly sends them through.

Games are Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Group D:
USA 4 (+2)
Australia 3 (0)
Sweden 2 (0)
Nigeria 1 (-2)

Most likely result is USA beating Nigeria and Sweden beating Australia, then USA and Sweden ending up 1-2. But this has been a very even group, and every team has it all to play for. Every team is theoretically alive to win the group, and certainly alive to advance. I’ll be cheering for USA and Australia. Games are Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Group E:
Brazil 6 (3)
Costa Rica 2 (0)
Spain 1(-1)
S. Korea 1 (-2)

Brazil is locked for the #1 spot, giving them literally nothing to play for. Do the just go super-easy? Do they pull all their starters to avoid injury? If so, brave Costa Rica has a chance to earn a result, but they really need a win, because Spain and South Korea will know that a draw is a disaster, and will be going at it full force. I’d love to see Costa Rica win, but the most likely result is Brazil #1, and then the winner of Spain v Korea #2, which could go either way.

Games are Wednesday at 7.

Group F:
Colombia 4 (2)
England 3 (0)
France 3 (-1)
Mexico 1 (-1)

Another one that’s super wide open. Final games are England v Colombia and France v Mexico, Wednesday at 4. The big story from this group is Colombia, who came in the lowest ranked team in the group. But again, no one is assured of anything here. Purely by rankings, England and France “should” win, in which case #1 v #2 in the group would come down to goal differential, leaving Colombia in 3rd place with 4 points, which is likely enough to go through anyhow… but the way the teams have been playing, who knows?
Should be a fun three days!

Euro qualifying was the premier event of the weekend.

No

A World Cup is always premier. There werent even any marquee matchups although England v Slovenia finished nicely. You might need to read this:

Nice wrap-up/preview Max!!

Every four years for the last 25 I’ve tried to watch the WWC but the quality of play is simply dreadful. There are moments where the play approaches something other than awful but they are few and far between.

Now I know you didnt watch the Eng v Mex or Fra v Col matches yesterday because they were entertaining and fluid. The womans game is evolving and the players are better.
