FIFA World Cup 2026 - discussion etc

My son and I are pretty excited. I spent a lot of time checking ticket drops and finally got lucky on one.
We’re at Gillette all the time, aside from the match it’ll be interesting seeing what FIFA has done with/to the place.

On a different topic, Japan - Brazil is interesting because of the nikkei diaspora to Brazil, which has a giant Japanese presence (and there’s also a counter-movement of Japanese-descendant Brazilian workers to Japan). It’s created a lot of affinities between the two countries, and probably some interesting decisions on which side to root for.

Kid: “Can we get Hans Zimmer?”

Mom: “We have Hans Zimmer at home”

Hans Zimmer at home:

And no Phial of Galadriel to light the way, or lembas for sustenance.

Has there ever been a Copa America group of Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina? Or did Chile, Bolivia and Peru ever make up (most of) a group at some point?

(I should try to find out if there’s ever been a Hex where the U.S. has invaded each of the other five countries - Canada and Mexico, check and check - would William Walker count for Nicaragua? Have to think…)

I doubt it, Brazil and Argentina are usually seeds, and Uruguay often is too.

But their coach Gustavo Alfaro wrote a book called “Cazadores de utopias imposibles” (Hunters of impossible utopias), and if there’s an Utopia that’s Impossible is Paraguay getting far in this World Cup, so Alfaro is probably preparing his hunting gear

Interesting thing about Turkey’s last minute winner against USA, means they get to keep the “Unofficial World Championship” that they came in with.

“…hunting gear…”

I beloeve the NHL equivalent would be golf clubs. :slightly_smiling_face:

My son and I woke up at 2:00 AM to watch Japan.

Exciting game.

Great start.

omg shades of Maradona

Japan scores!

Well now.

That was a helluva play. Intercepting the pass at midfield and taking it all the way down for a great shot.

Yes Japan! :japan: :japan: :japan: :japan: :japan:

Nice save

Players get up so much more quickly when their own teammates knock them down.

Japan’s defense is holding tough

My son laughed

Casemiro is being shown up by this all action Japanese midfield.

I’m now picturing a player bumping into one of his teammates and then rolling over about 15 times, clutching his face, like he would do if it was an opposition player.

I’m starting to regret having sold my ticket for this Brazil-Japan game…
