Well, I have Peacock, so I could watch the games and replays on there, but they don’t have the rights to the English announcing, so it’s all in Spanish. I’m not knocking it, but I don’t understand Spanish…
I googled where to watch it in English and it seems only FOX and ESPN have the rights… And I’m not about to pay for another subscription service to watch a game that I might not enjoy.
I did put on a couple matches during the last week, I think I had one on for about 5 minutes before I lost interest. Maybe I would have more interest if the announcing was an English, but it’s my fault for not knowing Spanish, I’m not complaining.
Anyway I’m going to bow out of this thread for now because I don’t want to hijack it but I will follow along all through the rest of the world cup and possibly post and put on the game when it’s the final.
Looking forward to France-Spain, and wondering if Spain can frustrate France by just holding the ball. France already aren’t a ball possession team. I could see France getting caught on counters by getting too goal-hungry when getting possession. May need to hedge my “France to win the WC” bet a bit. On the other hand, Belgium created quite a few chances and Emery looked vulnerable at goal. Could also be a high scoring game. Now I just need to figure out a way to cancel a work meeting so that I can watch the whole game.
If you just want to watch the final, Fox has a three-day trial.
Also, I watched most of the first week on Peacock (because Fox’s trial is only three days, I needed to wait a bit so I would only have to pay for one month). I didn’t understand any of it (except “falta” and “gol”), but they’re much more engaging as announcers than the Fox people.
I watched the 2002 world cup final at a friend’s house who is originally from Peru, and another friend who is French. Although my French friend could not understand Spanish, he asked to switch to the Spanish broadcast (it might have been univision) because he liked the energy they brought to the commentary even if he did not understand it. In fact, apparently a lot of people in the US are liking Telemundo despite not speaking Spanish:
For me one of the funniest part was the Japan - Tunisia match. The Telemundo announcer when Japan first scored, after the requisite Three hour Gooooool, added Gambatte Kudasai (do your best), the second was followed by Bansai!, the third by Sugoi (amazing). That one made me laugh the hardest. The fourth was followed by another Bansai, which I assume is because he had used up all the words and phrases he knew in Japanese. Since Japanese and Spanish have the same vowel and consonant sounds, it sounded correct, but I really was not expecting that at all. I doubt the English commentators would ever thinking of doing that.
I asked myself the same questions, and yes, I also concluded that Gerd Müller*s ten goals in Mexico might get surpassed, by whoever, Messi, Mbpappé, Haaland or Kane, but that Fontaine’s record will stand forever. But don’t forget that both Müller and Fontaine had fewer games to achieve their phenomenal quotas.
Yeah, if everything works out for Mbpappé, he still has two WCs in him and can set the record for total goals in WCs. But 13 within one tournament? That would still be crazy in this bloated field of 48 teams.
You are not hijacking at all!, please post more , it’s fascinating to me to read the opinions of people who do not know much about football, a totally alien mindset to someone from Argentina
Is it that crazy? 1st tournament with the expanded field and I think there’s a decent chance we get two 10+ goal scorers with an outside chance at 3. Messi’s on 8 with possibly 3 more games and he missed 2 penalties. Haaland scored 16 goals in 8 games in qualifying. Obviously the group stage is better on average than a UEFA qualifying group, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see players coming out of the group stage on 6 or 7 goals.
Would need a deep run with a high attacking team, with a soft group, but that feels more doable to me than a player scoring 7+ in four different cups.
Tangentially: I got a fraud alert this morning on my credit card, “did you purchase PSG BOMBERJKT”, and I could not mash the “I do not recognize this charge” button fast enough.
Harry Kane is rightly taking a lot of shit this morning for golfing 18 months ago with the orange toad, and then not thinking anything wrong of it in a press conference yesterday, in fact praising his game.
This is a larger sin by far than Haaland liking tweets back during Covid from Trump and Matt Gaetz, so I’m now leaning Norway.
