Weird situation this third place rule creates is that teams like Scotland have to wait around for days in their training camp to see what happens. Not to mention the fans.

I was trying to watch the Canada/Switzerland game while working. Canada had a really weak defense. Switzerland took time off their busy passing agenda to take advantage of it. It could have been a lot worse.
That Korean rebound should’ve gone in the net.

If I got everything right, after today’s action:
Group A: Mexico wins the group with 9 points. South Africa finishes second with 4 points and advances for the first time in history. South Korea finishes with 3 points and a -1 GD and is definitely on the bubble.
Group B: Switzerland wins the group with 7 points. Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina both finish with 4 points, but Canada advances with a better GD. Bosnia-Herzegovina will probably also advance, with a GD of -1.
Group C: Brazil and Morocco both finish and advance with 7 points; Brazil wins the group with a better GD. Scotland finishes in third with 3 points and a -3 GD and is in serious danger of being eliminated.
Yeah, the coach was in tears. The ending of the match was great with all those attacks and saves, South Korea tried but the defense was just too good.
I know some people complained that by having more teams it makes the last match not matter, but I really don’t think it is a change from before. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don’t regardless of how many teams qualify.

What is the change, for me at least, is that you don’t really know what’s at stake, especially for those teams on 3 points. -1 GD for South Korea is probably going to be OK. But -3 for Scotland likely not. But we don’t know for sure.
I feel like those matches would have been more enjoyable if we knew for sure what Scotland (for example) needed to do.
It also feels very unfair that those teams playing in later groups and fighting for 3rd place spots will know exactly what GD and GS numbers they need to hit to progress while these earlier groups had to guess.
Yes, it’s a big advantage for the later groups to have the knowledge of the final results of the early groups. There is maybe some compensation because the early groups end up with more rest between matches compared to the late groups.

As a Canadian I am happy to not have to face South Korea in LA which might’ve amounted to a home game for them. Not to be disrespectful of South Africa, but they’re about as favourable an opponent as Canada could hope for as a second-place team. On the other hand, Canada’s probably a pretty favourable opponent for SA too

Third place in Group J will be the loser of Algeria v Austria on 3 points. If they draw, Algeria will be third with a -2 goal difference.
That means Bosnias record of 4 points and a -1 goal difference is definitely enough for a place in the next round.
Typical Scotland, If a 5 goal defeat would be enough to see them through, you could bet your house they’d end up losing by 6, with the 6th being some mad goalkeeping error
