However, Qatar getting it is absurd, for all the reasons given earlier in this thread.

Listening to the UK media after the decision, one of the reoccuring themes is that IF Fifa had no intention of awarding the tournament to England, then why did they make them jump through all the hoops and spend all the money preparing a bid?
If you have the best technical bid (and they did), the best economic bid (they did), the best risk assessment (they had), complete government backing and popular support from the population, and you still dont win, then it must be for reasons that you had no control over anyway. If so, then it was dishonest on Fifas part to maintain a fiction that England was in with a chance.
But hey, then the likes of Sepp Blatter wouldnt have had their all expenses paid trips around the likes of England and Portugal.

At any rate, I see that England’s bid chief, Andy Anson is calling for the U.K. and U.S. to submit no more bids until FIFA is reformed. I have to agree with him. If the process is crooked, then leave it to the crooks.
If this was all above board, as AK84 seems to suggest, then I say we can’t win in the future either. Qatar is about the weakest bid imaginable and they won by a wide margin. This was a bid with no European competition. That won’t happen in 2026. And good luck going up against China in 2030. These bids cost money and the time of talented people to put together and that could be better used elsewhere. Australia should also give up on it. They got 1 vote. There could be no clearer signal that FIFA has no interest in you than that.
I ran the idea of going to the Qatar World Cup past my wife last night. She rolled her eyes and scoffed at it. And she’s from the Middle East! Her family has an apartment in the U.A.E. and yet the idea of going to this Cup is laughable to her. I foresee slow ticket sales.
Well Russia has promised visa-free travel for ticket holders. Let’s see how they implement this but I cannot imagine the US ever offering to do something like this. For countries like Russia and Qatar the World Cup is a very big deal and you can expect the governments to bend over backwards to make the event a success.

Does that include me, someone that doesn’t live in a country that was bidding for it? Someone that has clearly said that Russia doesn’t really bother him, it is Qatar that is utterly ridiculous. Bear in mind that Qatar was up against a group of countries that I have no connection to whatsoever. In fact, I’ve only been to one of them (the US) and that was back in 1998.

Well, no. It is a country with 1.7 million people and a team that sucks. If they had awarded the world cup to say Nebraska , a place with 1.7 million people ,and I’m sure they have a team that sucks, but shares my culture and system, I would have found it equally asinine.
