Fighting Animals (inspired by lion/tiger/bear threads)

I read once (confidence-inspiring way to start, eh?)–I believe in National Geographic–that in fights between lions and hyenas, whichever party had the most mass “won.”

The researchers had been following African lions. (Among other things, they learned just how much nocturnal hunting lions do.) On many occasions, hyena packs came to scavenge lion kills, often resulting in a fight. The researchers examined the outcomes of a number of such fights (which animals were driven off) and concluded that when the lion(s) weighed more than the combined weight of the hyena pack, the lion(s) won, and vice-versa.
