I did my taxes about a month later than usual this year because I had a tax slip go missing in the mail. It’s especially annoying because I am due a massive refund this year for various reasons (mostly me being too lazy to adjust my withholding, admittedly).
I once started my taxes on the afternoon of April 15th, good fun that’s for sure … these days I have half the forms done by mid-December, I just have to be careful to not send the return in before December 31st, that might look suspicious.
I like how forms were suppose to be easier…
Start a form, go to form 2222 to get the number on line 39 but first check form 666 and add the line on 21 to the number on line 44 of form C 2Z
Yeah.
But don’t forget that if form 2333 applies, you shouldn’t be using 2222 in the first place.
If you hate doing your taxes, you might be interested in knowing that the Obama administration and some people in congress wanted to make it so that the IRS does your taxes for you, sends you a completed form and let you sign off on it. You would still be able to do your own if you didn’t like it. H&R Block, Turbo Tax and others lobbied and killed it.
I thought Patriot’s Day was April 15.
Or is it just automatically the day the IRS says tax returns need to be postmarked by?
That’s why I love Turbo Tax. The questions are more like “Did you buy a donkey last year?” The optional responses are “No”, “Hell No” and “I need help typing in No.”
I checked my paperwork and I did not buy a donkey last year… but I did donate one to Goodwill for a hefty deduction.
They need to have a Turbo Tax for trusts. Surely I am not even remotely the only one in this situation.
Same deal - penalties and interest are calculated on the amount owed, so if you don’t owe anything you will not be penalized. If you are expecting a refund, any interest on refunds due will only be calculated from when you actually file, however.
Also just wanted to point out that Canadian Tax Day is normally April 30 (extended to May 2 for this year as April 30 is a Saturday), in case you were confused.
This is the first year since the 1980’s that I actually filed on time (mid march with an accountant’s help) instead of my normal process of rushing to file an extension on April 15 along with a check for guesstimated amount owed.
I’ll tell my horror story. On Sunday 4/17 I sat down and logged into TurboTax. I had all of my papers together and went through all of the on screen steps, including the one asking if I had a 1099-Misc, of which I couldn’t find one in my papers.
I was thrilled when I found that I was getting a refund of over $500 from the fed gov and would break even with the state.
I submitted the returns - the point of no return - then remembered that I had a 1099-Misc that I had gotten by email for some online contract work I did in December, for thousands of dollars.
I ended up have to print out all of my forms and prepare and mail amended returns for both the state and the federal. And because the federal is going to be auto-deposited, I had to write a check for the amount I really owed plus the amount that is going to be deposited since the deposit will happen before the amended return is processed. I also had to pay the state. So I ended up writing checks totaling over $1000. Fortunately I’ll be getting a chunk of that back.
So I ended up paying for the ease of an online return, and still had to fill out and mail a bunch of forms. :o
I typically do them in Mid-February. We really screwed up my (soon to be ex) wife’s disability tax withholdings though, including the large backpay check. So I knew we were going to owe a boatload this year. So I didn’t file until Monday morning.
Ugh, ugh, ugh!
I just realized I only have a week left, and just started wrangling papers this afternoon.
Ugh! There goes my weekend.
(My spouse gets both CPP and OAS, if you file late, you have to reapply for both. From scratch, and it’s a long, stupid process! )
Tax Day used to be the Ides of March. I didn’t much like the change to April, since it just gave an
additional month to procrastinate in - and who needs encouragement for that?
