Taxes done just in time - a Straight Dope Roll call

Shout out as you finish and mail your taxes today. :stuck_out_tongue:

Aceplace57 - taxes are done!!! Who hoo heading to post office on the way in to work.
The Postal Service screwed everybody’s fun by announcing they weren’t extending their pickups till midnight on tax day. The radio stations here used to setup a remote broadcast at the pick up center for last minute tax filers.

That mean you better now the latest pickup location in your city. Mine is 14 miles away at the Post Office Distribution Center. Their last pickup is at 7pm M-F

So why didn’t you file electronically?

I thought only tax places like H&R Block could file electronically? Or maybe if you pay for Turbo Tax software it does it too?

I did my own this year using the fill-in pdf’s on the IRS site. Printed them and mailed.

Typically I go to a tax place when something changes. Like when I bought my house, and needed to itemize deductions for my mortgage interest. After the tax place did it one year, then I did it from then on using there’s as a template.

Next year I have to start reporting stock dividends that I inherited. So I’ll use a tax place that one time and get a new template.

Just mailed in the other half of what I owed from last year and this year’s first estimated payments. Never a pleasant experience…

Just back from the post-office. Yay.

I mailed mine on Friday, and finished them thanks to the awesome advice of the SDMB! Thanks everyone!

Done last Friday. Small refund coming in.

Slackers! Mine are done, filed electronically, and the refunds have already been deposited (and spent!)

I mailed my in yesterday. I used to mail mine on the day after the due date to see if anyone actually noticed the 4/16 postmark in the flood of returns coming in. Never got called on it. Now that I’m paying a much larger amount, I don’t want to tempt fate or play games anymore. I do miss the days of my young and irresponsible youth.

For next year —> http://www.irs.gov/efile/

US-centric… still got a couple of weeks to go here

Same here. Filed back at end of January got the return in February and the next day I mailed off checks for bills.

What a bunch of slackers. I finished my taxes way early this year - Sunday night in fact. H&R Block, free version, e-file.

Also have gotten my state and federal refunds. E-filed both with Turbo Tax. The latest Turbo Tax edition seemed much improved, especially for doing Schedule Cs.

Mailed mine Monday morning. First time in years that I’ve completed and mailed my return prior to the due date. I always end up owing a bit, and I’ve deluded myself into thinking I’ve somehow stuck to The Man by hanging on to the money (a whopping $68 this year) until the last possible moment.

Yes, I’m sure e-file is more convenient, but I like actual paper and stamp. Makes the whole process more concrete.

I know, I’m full of quirk.

Click. Click. Clickety-clickety-clickety click.

“direct deposit of federal refund” – click.

“use account on file” – click.

“direct debit of amount owed state” – click

“use account on file” – click.

“Transmit returns?”

Click!

There!

All done. And it’s only two o’clock!~

I FUBARed mine :smack:, and am expecting trouble, but got confirmation they were “Accepted” this morning.

Mailed them a check yesterday with *possibly *the wrong voucher. Here’s hoping they match the return with the payment.

But hey, at least they ain’t late!

I finished the returns last week but didn’t file them until last night (e-file), but I owe to both state & fed, so I mailed in the checks. Wife dropped them off at the P.O. a couple hours ago. She also mailed the first installment of our estimated 2012 taxes to both state & fed. Wrote a few big fat checks last night. To pay electronically would have added a fee, so I wrote checks.

This past year I actually did stick it to The Man by not paying any taxes the second half of 2011. The amount I made in various investments was more than the penalty assessed by the government for underpaying on my estimates.

E-filed on Sunday night, got a rejection notice, re-typed some stuff on the W-2s, re-submitted yesterday afternoon, and … nothing more.

Here’s hoping I don’t get a last-minute rejection notice again. No refund, either. :frowning:
