Films You Dislike, But Recommend Seeing

Are there any films you didn’t particularly like, but would still suggest someone see it if, perhaps, for no other reason than to discuss why you didn’t like it.

I am not talking about some crap film that was a waste of time, but a film that had some moments, but a film you didn’t particularly like.

For me, a recent example is “Knowing” with Nicolas Cage.
Without spoiling it, I think the special effects were decent, the story itself is not horrible, but I liked the beginning far better than the end…a bit too religiously dismal for my tastes.

Feel free to hash my opinion of Knowing, but the question is:

What films did you dislike, but still think worthy of telling people to see - simply to later discuss why you disliked it?

I think the central premise of Oliver Stone’s “JFK” is a load of crap, a pernicious lie.

And yet, I think it’s a brilliant piece of filmmaking by a man who was then at the peak of his powers.

I think any film aficionado should see it and appreciate it… and THEN dismiss it as paranoid bullshit.

astorian’s example is perfect. A thoroughly entertaining movie were it about a fictional president say President Biff Johnston and his fictional assassination. Not as well rooted in reality as Batman.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Plastic – er, Crystal – Skull.

I was disappointed, as I think most people were. But,

– I’m glad I saw it, because I don’t think I could not have seen all the Indy films,
– There were a couple of entertaining sequences, even if the movie fails as a whole, and
– Speaking to one of the OP’s points, I’ve had some fascinating discussions, both on line and IRL, about what exactly made the original trilogy work against what makes Crystal Skull not work.
