Oh, by the way, for those saying Obama should have declined the prize so it would go to someone more deserving, that’s not how it works. There are no runners-up for a Nobel Prize – you either win it or you don’t, and if you decline it, nobody gets it.
And for the record, Obama has been doing a lot of work negotiating with various countries in the last year, but most of it doesn’t get in the news. Did you know that he persuaded Iran to let Russia enrich its uranium for nuclear plants? That means that Iran ships its uranium to Russia, and gets back nuclear plant fuel, as opposed to nuclear bomb fuel, which in turn means that Iran has nuclear plants, not nuclear bombs.
Not only that, but he’s donating the check to charity. If he were to decline it, those charities wouldn’t get that money, and neither would anyone else. Accepting the award just to be able to give the money to charity is reason enough to do it. Those who think he should decline are trying to take money away from those charities.
Now, if I were a typical “conservative” suffering from Obama Derangement Synndrome, I would now totally ignore that very important example you just provided and mindlessly repeat, “Obama has done nothing, NOTHING I SAY, to earn this award!”
Since per Nobel’s will the award is for things done in 2008, you are 100% correct in your repetition. Unless you want to be the first one to stand up and tell us what he did in 2008 to earn it. Everyone else is strangely silent on the question, but clearly you must know more than they do.
Yes, it would, if they were actual demons … but most of them are like my father-in-law — old, frightened, and worried about the changes he sees happening around him, scared by things he doesn’t understand, worried by a world where his old ways don’t work and he knows no new ways.
Demonizing him is a sick joke. He’s a tired old man … but he votes, and he notices what assholes say about him. Calling him a terrorist doesn’t help in any way. Why is this so hard to understand?
In 2008, Senator Obama spoke out against the Bush/Cheney way of relating to the rest of the planet. He did this so effectively that the American people made the decision to elevate him to the office from which he could put his ideas into action.
As to the other, I realize that there are no such things as actual demons. And I wish you nothing but success in your ongoing task of helping your father-in-law to understand that the new ways must be tried, because the old ways don’t work; and in any event, he will have the loving support of his extended family in coping with whatever bewildering twists he is subjected to by the new ways.
ETA: You are engaging yourself with that task, aren’t you? I thought so.
Tagos, you’re not following the story. The DNC is saying that I’m siding with the terrorists, and I voted for Obama. So punch me, kick me in the face, bite me, and guess what? I won’t vote for Obama next time. (Actually I likely will vote for him, because although the DNC [and some of Obama’s followers on this board] are brain-dead ignorant insulting assholes, he’s not. But others will not be so understanding …)
NOT EVERYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH YOU IS SIDING WITH THE TERRORISTS!!! The DNC has taken Bush’s line, that everyone who opposed him was siding with the terrorists, and claimed it as their own … and you think that’s a brilliant plan? People screamed when Bush said it, but now it’s the right thing for the Democrats to do? Really?
Meh … go ahead, pound your chest, tell us what a real man you are for punching the bully in the face, that’ll get you plenty of votes in the next election … you do remember that we’re trying to win elections and pass legislation, don’t you? Keep up the oh-so-adult tactic of punching and kicking and biting, everyone knows thats the very best way to attract voters, win elections and get bills through Congress.
And yes, I know we have a 60 vote majority right now, but imbeciles that keep insulting voters have made it a virtual certainty that we won’t have that after the next election, which is not far away. We should bless the Republicans for their asshole tactics, they drive voters into our arms … but imitate their tactics? Whatever for?
Yes, I am engaging with that task. My mother-in-law is in the nursing home with a stroke, and my father-in-law is nearly blind. They are half a continent away. My wife and I have bought them a mobile home near us with a nursing home nearby, and we’ll be moving them out near to us next month so that we can take care of them.
And although they are unrepentant and unregenerate Republicans, anyone who thinks that they are siding with terrorists, or that they should be punched, kicked, and bitten into submission, should be hounded out of the Democratic party as an insensitive, unthinking asshole.
I can’t tell you how tired I am of the Republican tactics … but to see the Democrats adopting them simply breaks my heart.
Then best wishes to all four of you, and happy Thanksgiving.
Y’know, it would have been nice if the country had been a little less distance down the shitter by the time last November came around. The Democrats, me included, could have used a bit of an opportunity to blow off steam, without sending some of our own members into fits of hand-wringing despair.
Yep, right on cue. Provide evidence of something done before–not to mention one can point out that it is the committee’s prerogative to consider actions done in the period during which they convene for deliberation–and some strangely idiotic nincompoop is still going to respond with the same idiocy.
If you want to elevate yourself above dumbassery, read the NPP committee’s report, read many of the points made in the numerous threads about this all over the SDMB, watch the Rachel Maddow video (which has been linked in more than one thread) in which she directly responds to your “point,” and then, if you so chose, argue out how you specifically disagree that those points are good enough for the award. Then perhaps you won’t be wasting time and internet bandwidth.
But to keep repeating that “people are silent” is just stupid.
