How do finches know how to feed from those cylindrical finch feeders filled with thistle seed? I see finches every day outside my kitchen window at our feeder, and I wonder how they figure it out in the first place. I’ve never seen any other type of bird try to feed from a finch feeder. Could someone enlighten me?
Finches have very narrow bills, and the slits in finch feeders can only be accessed by them. Another variation is the goldfinch feeder. It’s the same feeder, but it’s upside down, so the slit is under the perch. Most finches can’t hang upside down to eat, so your clientele is pretty much limited to goldfinches, who can eat that way.
