Finding a Long-Lost Book

Ever wished you could find a book you read a long time ago, lost track of, but still remember fondly? Can’t recall the author’s name or the title, but still you remember characters and scenes from it?

Well… way back around 35 years ago, I read a historical novel about the Mongols of Genghiz Khan’s time. Somehow, it’s stuck with me, but without any more to go on than that, I never expected to find it again. Until the day, just on a whim, I did an Internet search with various key words.

And found it!!!

Turns out it’s Cecelia Holland’s Until the Sun Falls and I found it for sale on Amazon. After reading their description of the book, I was pretty sure it was The One, so I ordered it. It’s just arrived, and YES!!! It IS the book I remembered!!

Now, I’m hoping upon rereading it after all these years that I won’t be disappointed…

ABE posts queries of this sort on their front page. You send them whatever you remember of the book, and they post it in the hope that a vistor to the site will know what the book is.

Loganberry does the same thing for children’s books. They also keep a list of past queries with answers. They have a very high success rate, but they also have a fee (pretty low, though).

I’ve found a number of lost books this way. It is such a high to lay your hands on some half-forgotten book from years ago and suddenly remember it all.

I got one when I was a kid called “Dragonworld,” dunno what ever happened to it. I looked for it and looked for it for years. On a whim about a year ago, I tried Amazon. Got it a few days later. It’s not as good as I remember it being, but I treasure it anyway.
