Finding Cecil Adams and The Straigt Dope Message Board

A friend pointed me in this direction. I lurked for a while, then decided to register.

Despite my low post count, I stumbled upon the SD when it was on AOL. They had some promotion going on that made you look at semi-obscure AOL sites to win prizes. The Straight Dope was one of them.

I read all the archives and, inspired by an article in The Onion, asked the question, “Why is milk more expensive than gasoline?” I started going to the Web site as soon as it was announced.

I used to have another name on this board. Can’t even remember what it is. I took on a huge job that severly limited my online time. But now, I’ve reclaimed that time. For the past month, I have yet to go on the computer without going here. I don’t expect to stop.

My dad and I have always been into trivia, and he alwasy bought books. So when I was about 6 or 7, I started reading the Straight Dope books. Read them all, andthere was a reference to the website in the blue one.

The rest is history. I lurk 'round these parts more than I post… I feel like a stalker.

I don’t exactly remember how I got here exactly. I think I vaguely remember that it came from searching for some sex-related terms and happened upon a column. I didn’t go onto the message boards for a while. Instead, since you couldn’t get a list of columns, I searched for “the” and read all the columns that interested me, probably about half of them. Then I got onto the message boards. Probably the best investment of time I’ve ever made on the internet.

Oh yeah, and before I ever knew about the site, I once read one of the books at a friend’s house.

ChiefScott brought me to this group of people. It took me a short while to realize the hearts and humor of many. There were times I would get so jealous of the teasing ways. I was afraid the Chief might have been sorry at times, but with his patience, I came to understand. Thank you Chief for sharing another part of your life with me. I have truly never in my life met such wonderful people…
