Fired green tomatoes (not the movie)

Green tomatoes on The Apprentice?

I have also diced them for stirfries–try it or be really jealous–and made fresh salsa verde out of them. I have also chopped them finer and made a kind of tart relish out of them.

I have made jam out of ripe tomatoes; maybe I’ll try green tomatoes this year.

How about a tomato chutney? I haven’t made it but I saw a cooking program and it look good…and fun to make. And if you need any inspiration you could read the beginning of Midnight’s Children.

Damn. I haven’t had fried green tomatoes in probably about fifteen years. When I made them, I did them the way I make any fried veggie, including squash or eggplant. Just dredge 'em in flour or cornmeal, add salt and pepper (and whatever other seasonings ticke your fancy, garlic powder is quite nice) and fry. I used to use butter, but these days I use olive oil. Shallow pan (usually cast-iron skillet). Yummy.

Never had pickled green tomatoes, but they sound mighty tasty.

After you’ve had your fill of fried green tomatoes, for your next adventure try sweet potato fries. There are a couple of bars here in Vegas that serve them. Big Dogs serves them up with honey dijon sauce, which is just heavenly. The other bar, the name of which escapes me, for some strange reason, serves them with maple flavored syrup and dusts them with powdered sugar, which is not so good. Sweet potatoes don’t fry up as crispy as regular potatoes, but they are still quite yummy.

duffer, when you get tired of firing your green tomatoes, send some my way, OK?

I love fried green tomatoes. My mom’s recipe was to soak them in salt water then dredge them in a flour/salt/pepper mixture and fry in butter.

mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I think I’ll try t-keela’s cornstarch batter next time. <sigh> If I only had some green tomatoes <sigh>

Wouldn’t a fired green tomato be one that was stuck into a fire? I image that would be quite good–burned outside, but really cooked on the inside. Add to soups and sauces.

blue crap dip/saladish stuff? Was that soft shelled blue crap by any chance?

Good day to try fried green tomatoes… It’s Friday here!

D’oh! Now I won’t be able to eat it without laughing and snorting crap dip out my nose. (But why is it blue?)
