Firefox on Android opens multiple windows

Help! This is vexing me and sucking up my monthly data allotment. I’ll suddenly hear something in my pocket and find that there’s a Firefox window with a video going. I’m mystified as to how it happens as I’ve hit the power button once to inactivate the phone (Samsung Galaxy S8 active) before slipping it into a shirt pocket. Sometimes there are multiple windows, six or more, open. This just started two days ago, so I’m curious what triggered it, but mostly would like to know how to stop it. Any help appreciated.

Could this be a browser hijacking app/virus?

The “power” button just turns the screen off, the phone continues to operate in the background in a low power consumption state. That’s how you get notified of things like emails, text messages, and phone calls.

This sounds like some sort of malware. First I’d try uninstalling Firefox, but it’s not opening pages on its own. If the problem moves to another browser like Chrome then I’d consider doing a Factory Reset of the phone, it’s drastic but will take the phone back to factory defaults and should get rid of the malware.

Think of what you did or installed before the problem started, and try to avoid that app or site in the future. Or was there some sort of strange text message or email you clicked on?
