Is there either a setting or an addon/plugin that will squelch any imbedded music in a website , ala myspace without me having to mute the volume controls.

I second the emotion.
Depends on what language is used to create the player that plays the music, as blocked content is going to be context dependent.
FlashBlock is probably one of my favourite plugins. It disallows any site from playing Flash content until A) You right-click and allow the site to play flash content, and/or B) You click the icon that it replaces the Flash content with to allow just that one Flash item to play.
In a similar vein, NoScript blocks Java, Javascript, and other executable content until you add it to your trusted domain list.
Then there’s StopAutoplay which is intended specifically to block embedded music automatically playing from a web page.
I would suggest installing all three, as they each handle different types of content but in concert will block the majority of potentially unwanted content until you approve it.
To summarize Mindfield’s post, there’s not a lone, standard way to embed sound on a website, so there’s not a standard way to prevent its playing.
I just plug in my earphones and don’t put them in my ears. I only unplug them or put them in my ears when I want to hear something.
Why not just mute the sound, then?
I already had noscript installed ,but the noauto worked like a charm , thanks

Also note, regarding MySpace specifically, that there is an option in your settings (somewhere) that you can set to make people’s homepage player not play when you go to their page. You know, the little Flash radio thing where people can pick one song from a library to play when you land on their page.
Although, this doesn’t work for band pages, which sucks
FlashBlock will put a stop to that right quick – unless you explicitly tell it that Flash scripts are allowed on all MySpace pages.
