So I’m happily watching a movie on my laptop and when it’s over I go to browse the web. Wait, WTF are all these ads doing here?! I run AdBlock and NoScript and a few other extensions to prevent that kind of thing.
Oh, it seems Firefox just “improved” itself with an update that renders all of those extensions unusable! Nope, can’t re-install them. I guess I’m supposed to say, “Thanks FF, for taking such a useful action on my behalf, without my asking.”
FUCK YOU!!!
How the in god’s name is this an “improvement”?! My computer is now LESS secure because I can’t use these extension! What the ever loving fuck?!?! And don’t tell me it’s for my own good. I’ve never had computer security issues because of the various measures I take. And this kind of heavy handedness and mindless updates that do fuck-all for users is why I usually disable automatic updates. For exactly this kind of nonsense. Except I’m on a new computer and forgot to turn off that “feature”. Lucky me.
So unless someone has any ideas on how to recover these features, I’m off to find another browser. This kind of thing really pisses me off and forcing these “improvements” through updates needs to fucking stop.
Was about to try installing an earlier version, but now I’m thinking simply fuck FF. I’d rather not go back to Chrome, and Tor is a nuisance. Any other browsers we like? Preferably without all the fuckery I’ve just experienced?
There’s an active reddit thread about this. As far as I can tell, the problem is an expired intermediate signing certificate of some sort. Mozilla has an bug report (or whatever you call it) and they’re working on it now.
I have no solutions, but thanks for mentioning it, Llama Llogophile. I had the exact same problem and it freaked me out a little that my Adblock Plus, Ghostery and other plugins had just… disappeared.
I wonder if Privacy Badger, Disconnect, or Trustwave still work? I got a new computer not that long ago and haven’t bothered installing Firefox because I’ve been using Chrome for work and it’s just easier.
I’m not a computer guy, but Mozilla is aware of the problem (link to mozilla bug page for the problem). There apparently are work-arounds to fix it on your PC, but I’m not savvy enough to go there. I’m pretty sure Firefox will fix the problem fairly quickly, but who knows how long it will take.
edit: one of the posts on the page says “Many people are very angry and it seems to be growing”. No shit. :smack:
It’s a compressed file that contains a folder with Firefox files. You delete what’s in your computer’s FF folder and replace it with these. Worked in an instant for me, extension back and working. It even got my bookmarks.
That said, I reluctantly got Chrome configured and running. So FF, this is your last chance…
If you don’t want to install the Nightly build (I used to use it but the incessant requests for updates got real old after a while) you can try this temp fix until Mozilla gets their shit together. Looks fairly straightforward. I’m still not affected but I have that page up for when it inevitably turns to shit on me.
In case you’re shellshocked from all the ads here and elsewhere on the internet and don’t want to click any links you don’t absolutely have to, SmartAleq’s linked solution is the following:
If you have the regular build (not the nightly/dev one) then the xpinstall.signatures.required set to false doesn’t fix this. But I got all of my add-ons back by going to about:debugging. Check the box to enable add-on debugging. Then click Load Temporary Add-On. Browse to your Firefox profile in appdata:
C:\Users<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles<some random shit>.default\extensions
In the extensions folder there are .xpi files, those are your extensions that you had. Load each one and don’t close Firefox until they fix this.
Yes, I suddenly noticed ads everywhere and then I looked around and all my extensions were gone and it was a nightmare! I managed to get to a page on Firefox with temporary add-ons but that isn’t going to work long term. I may have to migrate over to Chrome or something. This was a big deal IMO.
If I lost access to my LastPass I’d be screwed! One option you have is to use a different browser. If you are on PC your computer should have MS Internet Explorer or MS Edge. If you use Apple I think it comes with Safari (or it used to) or some other installed browser.
Can you not access LastPass through the web? Go to their website, sign in, and then you should have access to all your saved sites and passwords, I think.
ETA: didn’t see your latest post before. Yeah. Try Chrome.
