First Job New Nursing Grad (BSN)

My youngest sister just graduated from nursing school. She now has a BSN and will have to take her test in July to get a license in Illinois.

I was looking on line and it seems just horror story after horror story about nurses getting first jobs. It appears while there is a shortage of nurses, few hospitals and such like to employ first time nurses.

She did excellent in nursing school. She has letters of recommendations from her teachers and she is 24.

The one thing that really worries her is her lack of job experience. All she has ever done is work fast food. It took her six years to get through nursing school (she’s 24 now), but she refused to take out student loans, so at least now she has a BSN and no student debt.

But she only has worked at places like McDonalds, Burger King and Taco Bell. She did this as she was able to flex her schedule to meet the needs of her classes and off class schedules at hospitals.

So any advice you can think of? She says she can’t start looking till after July, because it’s useless to apply till after she gets her RN license.

Thanks

Here in Cal you can get an interim permit that lets you work, some places will consider you with one, some won’t. I know shit about the market in Illinois, but the last few years have been tight with people delaying retirement, going back to full time and institutions trying to reduce positions. Sorry I can’t give you any more specific advice. Good luck to her.
