One of my most liked films is First Men in the Moon (1964) with Edward Judd and Lionel Jeffries.
There is a scene where Martha Hyer is being looked at through a lens by the moon people. We see her as a skeleton and then she walks out and is dressed normally.
I am convinced that I saw this film a few times a long time ago on TV here in the UK and the scene has her shown clothed and also in (old style) underwear before being seen as a skeleton. Any recent showings and the DVD version don’t include this.
There are publicity shots for the film with her in that old style Victorian underwear so I don’t think I imagined it.
Can anybody shed any light on this? It’s all very innocent but I would like to see that scene again.
Thanks. Yes, that’s one of the publicity shots. She isn’t dressed like that in any part of the recent versions of the film that I have seen. It would be strange to have these photos taken if she never appears like this in the film.
It would be odd, but not unheard of. The cover for the video tape release of Hellraiser II- Hellbound features a still from a scene that was cut from the film. I found it strange at the time. I wasn’t the only one. The Hellraiser trading card series has a card with that same still. On the back is the explanation of why the scene was cut and how it ended up on the video box.
Remember that is those days there would be “US” and “European” cuts of movies. The European versions would have a bit racier stuff, etc. So I could imagine the European version of this had the underwear scene but not the US version.
This double-version business lasted a remarkably long time.
It is surprisingly hard to track down the European cut of a film still. Many sites don’t bother telling you which cut a film is. The default almost always seems to be the US cut.
