The first U.S. war bonds since World War II are nearing approval in Congress. Is this really a psychological boost? Because it depresses the hell out of me.
Why would war bonds depress you? I’d buy. IMHO, the bonds are to help with all the payments being doled out such as to saving the airlines, security, etc., not as a pysch or morale boost.
Yes. I know the real reason. But when you hear the words “war bonds,” it drums up an unpleasant period in our history. It needs to be re-branded.
Given that the U.S. Federal government engaged in a practice of Deficit Spending for most of the Cold War Era, we could call the U.S. Savings Bonds issued during that era “war bonds” as well.
Putting “war” in something’s name carries little weight with me, unless Congress actually does go and declare real honest-to-gosh War on someone (which hasn’t happened since World War II).
Leave it to a Republican administration to require direct supplemental financing from U.S. citizens. It’s a pity that raping the Social Security system in the name of high-tech weaponry and patriotism is not sufficient to satisfy their entrepreneurial zeal.
How would war bonds be any different from treasury bonds except the name?
