Fishing in the tsunami zone

So I see from CNN that there is a rush by the Tailanders Sumatrans and Indians to get back to fishing which is how many make their living.
How exactly is fishing done in these areas?
I heard one report that said the sea is only 10 feet deep for 10 miles in one area. I would guess that those small canoes that I have seen called fishing boats don’t fish further out than 10 miles
I would guess that nets would have been destroyed unless they were in deep water.

While I don’t know anything about the fishing techniques in that area, don’t be fooled by the small size of a vessel. I’ve seen tiny wooden canoe type boats over 100NM from friendly land. They may be working in conjunction with a mother ship. The ones I’ve seen have been trap fishing, where they set up a number of traps with buoys and return in a day or so to collect their catch. I’ve also seen moderately small boats (say 8-10m) fishing for shark using lines. The boats I’ve seen have been Indonesian.
