When I turn on the tank light, it’s slow to come on, and it only produces a tiny degree of illumination. I’m pretty sure it’s the ballast, because the tube is relatively new. Is replacing the ballast a job that somebody who has no electrician’s skills (and no soldering iron) can do, or should I just spring for a new tank hood?
Most of those small fluorescent lamps use an electronic ballast. IF it’s designed to be replaceable and IF you can find the appropriate replacement, it’s usually not too difficult to replace. You just use the old one as a template for the wiring for the new one. I’d say your easiest route overall is to just replace the complete assembly, though. But, if you can get the thing apart, I’ll see if I can help you find the right ballast.
Freakin’ Fabulous. Fantastic. I’m all for it.
