Fledgling Days by Emma Ford

I have just finished this book and found it to be utterly delightful. On a par with Sterling North’s beloved “Rascal” or other animal stories like “Ring of Bright Water” and “Seal Morning,” it tells of Ford’s introduction and absorption into the world of falconry. The writing style sparkles with authenticity and wit. Her knowledge of the field is obviously comprehensive and the illustrations are precise. Whether it be a heart wrenching chapter about Mrs. Potter, the eagle owl with bumblefoot or the hilarious antics of her hunting ferret, she brings it all to vivid life with her deft pen.

I saw this book and was obliged to buy it on the spot. A very dear friend has recently moved to Oregon specifically to begin falconry. A longtime participant at the Davis, California raptor center she is now ready to do so on her own. I intend to mail her this book as a surprise on the off chance she has not read it. I recommend this slim volume to anyone who has a love of animals and birds especially. It is a moving and eloquent tribute to our fine feathered friends.
