I like it for looking at other people’s accounts - I hate it for mine.
The new default photo when I log in seems to be the latest from my contacts - but really, my contacts don’t really use flickr that much, so it’s an old photo. It’s not likely to get replaced anytime soon. And I’d rather see my photos there.
I just came back from vacation, I’m uploading photos and this is harder to navigate around and tinker with.
I don’t like it. I want the old layout back.
…there isn’t a great amount of difference between SmugMug and Zenfolio: they both serve the same purpose and do the same things but with different interfaces. 500px is probably the next best option but people normally only use it for their “best stuff”. There are some new sites out there like Project 1709 from Canon (which i personally don’t rate: it really isn’t clear what sort of site it wants to be) and Adobe Revel (which is launching at the same time as an unprecedented amount of bad press after the decision to make most of their product range available subscription only). And of course there is Picasa, which is more album based, but if you are linking to your blog its a pretty good bet that works well. (And I can’t link to directly because my browser keeps redirecting to my gallery pages.)
This is a really interesting article (that I was planning to post myself) and I urge anyone with an interest in the internet to read it.
Here’s my photostream for anyone that’s interested: Ben Yacobi | Flickr
- as you’ll see I hardly every post to it these days! In fact part of me is thinking of withdrawing from Flickr totally. All it really does is provide a place for people to steal my images and copyright law has been softened up so much recently (especially in the UK) that I need to safeguard my work more fervently than ever! Real shame.
I have been at Flickr since 2007, had a pro account since 2008. I think the new look is butt ugly, the added perks useless, and the site heading down the Yahoo drain. I am opening an account on Ipernity.
Ipernity seems to be blocked at work, so that’s not a great option. For blogging stuff, I think Picassa may be my best bet, but their look for image sharing on the site itself is kind of ugly.
Apparently current Flickr Pro members will be grandfathered and as long as you auto renew, you can maintain the $25/year price to get the no ads and stats, which is basically the only thing that differentiates the paid/not paid membership. Not sure why anyone would pay as all ads can be blocked and the 1TB limit is pretty hefty.
Great pics, and from the travel bugs I assume you’re a geocacher as well?
You caught me. Most of the outdoor photos in my photostream were taken during some type of geocaching excursion.
Flickr doesn’t seem interested in Pro anymore. Their CEO has said, “There’s no such thing as Flickr Pro today because [with so many people taking photographs] there’s really no such thing as professional photographers anymore.” In any case, they’ve gone the same way as Google and Picasa by increasing the prices and only grandfathering old accounts in. And not just any account - you have to have had auto renew set up. There’s a photographer complaining about how he was cheated out of this by a 6 month Pro pass.
