Any flight sim players out there? I’m not one and am having trouble with the term Slewable HUD (Heads Up Display) The HUD part is easy but what exactly does slewable mean in relation to the HUD? All the googling I’ve done turns up the term but not an explanation. Thanks in advance.
I am not sure if this answer is specific enough for you but “slewable” means that you can skip over time and space very quickly such as setting up an airliner to 40,000 feet over the Pacific with the slew tools.
In real combat airplanes, a slewable HUD is the idea of presenting the HUD imagery directly on the helmet visor so you can see it wherever you point your face. i.e. look over your shoulder & still see & know your airspeed, altitude, attitude, and weapons envelopes.
The traditional HUD is/was a fixed piece of glass directly in the line of sight out the front windshield. It works great when facing forwards. But if the pilot looks aside, up, or over his (now his/her) shoulder, the traditional HUD is useless.
I’m guessing, but it probably means that the HUD details move with your sightline if you slew the viewpoint.
Modern sims let you move your head, to look out the sides at of the wings, or to track an opponent (usually with the high-hat on the joystick). However, the HUD usually stayed put in the 12 o’clock position, thus depriving you of critical information (like altitude, airspeed, target lock etc).
Given that modern avionics project HUD information from the pilots helmet, it is pretty reasonable for this info to move with the pilots viewpoint.
Of course, a glass cockpit would be cool, too (where the HUD displays views that you should not be able to see because airframe is in the way, ie looking down through the floor of the plane at the ground below).
Slew tends to get overused in the flight sim materials - it has so many meanings. It means to rotate round an axis (as in slewing the viewpoint), but can also mean to slide (as in slew movement mode, where the aircraft can be slid around in 3D space to get it to a particular point). It can also mean crowd.

Great. Thanks, any others want to chime in feel free. I am paying attention.
