Impervious? Bah! Firefox with NoScript & uBlock Origin and not a single ad on the home page and not a single ad anywhere when I clicked on the first story.
John Oliver had fun with the name Tronclast year

I suspect it’s your NoScript that’s blocking those ads. I didn’t say anything about script blockers. I use uBlock Origin with Chrome, and it does nothing on Tronc sites.
NoScript does block bad stuff very effectively. It also breaks lots of websites, which is why I don’t use it.
That may be it, but it may also be different third-party filter selections in uBlock. I don’t just run the default, oh no.
I was a little late coming to Facebook, but since then I’ve found it definitely has its uses. For me it’s been helpful reconnecting with old friends, and when I say “old” I mean very old, like friends I hadn’t communicated with since grade school. And there are other, not quite-so-old friends from UCSD and UCLA as well. So that’s all to the good. The one negative about FB, from my perspective, is that it’s really more about sharing pictures or very short status updates. By contrast, the Dope, which doesn’t allow users to post photos online*, tends to emphasize the use of verbal language, and I think it would be a shame to lose that.
*That is still true, isn’t it? I’ve noticed that links to photos often display automatically in Tapatalk, but I haven’t seen that happen while using a PC.
Yes that is still true, at least for me.
Me neither. Firefox on Mac and Ad Blocker. Sponsored links on the story page, but those are never blocked anywhere.
You need uBlock Origin Extra, then. I’m not sure why it’s not a part of regular uBlock Origin (even if it would be disabled by default since it’s more of a beta).
The scripts there are exploiting problems with Chrome, essentially overloading it and then slipping things in. Different tricks, such as making them think you aren’t using Chrome and deliberately breaking scripts, are used to try and stop this.
I’m hoping to get a raise out of this.
You get a 20% raise.
Hey, they never handed out raises back when I was a mod!
Dude, I am delighted to tell a (former) Moderator, “You were screwed!”
I am authorized to give you a 10% raise retroactive with back pay. If my math is correct, you should receive it contemporaneously with this post.
Eta: did you get it?
Don’t mods get a free copy of the Reader every week?
Just the Sunday funnies and the advertising inserts.
That’s what she said.
It’s not so much the cheetah fur as the blood, soft tissue and bone that concerns me. Once that stuff takes to carpeting, no amount of Oxyclean will remove it.
To address the O.P., well- it’s interesting as noted above how passé message boards are as a rule. Facebook was the final 450,000,000 nails in the coffin lid of message boards. I have, since its inception, participated in a message board involving my sub-specialty of cinematography. Once Facebook got going, someone started a Facebook Group naming it after our sub-specialty. Traffic dropped off markedly on the message board. Which is a shame.
That said, I sure hope that they leave the Dope alone. We’ve discussed quite a few times before the idea of archiving everything, everything- and relaunching elsewhere.
– worried –
I participate on SteveHoffman.tv, run by an audiophile mastering engineer that has grown to be the best general music discussion forum I’ve ever found.
It has no ads (let along browser crippling malware ones), is funded entirely by a single yearly donation round, runs a far more capable Forum software and is vastly more reliable and speedy than the Dope. From their front page:
Seriously, how difficult and expensive can it be to run one of these?
We are assuming that the new owners are interested in buying new software and merging the entire SDMB Archive into it.
Hell of an assumption…
