Florida ACLU Participates in Stupid Lawsuit

The ACLU …
The group sounds good in theory.

The ACLU only takes these cases to show the world that they support civil rights for all, not just the politically expedient groups. I think a couple of cases like these are more than made up for by oh, say, striking down the CDA.

I wonder what the situation is like with anti-mask laws. For instance, in some towns, you aren’t allowed to walk around with your face covered. The convenience store I once worked at wouldn’t let people enter the store with their faces covered (really only an issue at Halloween), because the surveillance cameras can’t deter crime or catch criminals if they don’t have a face to link to the criminal. Some places have an interest in security, such that I’d wonder if that interest overrides a supposed religious liberty.

BTW, is wearing the face covering really religious at all? I heard an Islamic caller on some talk radio show the other day claiming that the practice was not specifically endorsed by the Qu’ran, but rather is a cultural tradition.

No, it doesn’t. Florida has issued over 800,000 non-photo licenses in the past 5 years.
I read in an article (sorry no cite at the mo) that this is for military personnel who have Florida driving licences but who are out of state when they wish to renew their licenses. Florida allows them to renew by mail without having a photo, probably because whatever military branch they’re in will be able to verify they are who they say they are.

That’s not even close to all that matters, which is rather the point of the bloody lawsuit.

You’re right. I’m glad they got religion off the internet and put it in the drivers license bureau where it belongs.

Not quite. I can’t put my finger on it, but there is a difference. Face hiding is more about privacy and respect (for the women from families that “cover”) whereas breasts would be the same issue as for many western countries. At any rate, breasts would be MUCH worse.

Eg: I was reading the other day about ladies’ clubs in Saudi. Apparently the women can swim, but have to wear full bodysuits and kneelength shorts or something. I was surprised, because at ladies’ clubs ALL the attendants would be female. A muslim colleague told me there is possibly something in the Quran about same-genders also having to maintain certain covering from one another, or just general decency. So faces are fine between two women, but breasts are perhaps still taboo?

Really need a quranic scholar for this one…
