The Democratic Senate primary in Florida was already the nation’s ugliest—and that was before one side started fighting back.
Even before he officially entered the race, outspoken liberal Rep. Alan Grayson and his allies spent months slinging attacks at his rival for the nomination, fellow Rep. Patrick Murphy. Now the Murphy campaign, which has so far taken a hands-off approach to its incendiary rival, is starting to fight back: accusing Grayson of hypocrisy in his personal business dealings.
It’s the apparent start of what could be an ugly, yearlong slog toward Florida’s Democratic primary, one that many Democrats fear will damage their chances of winning the open swing-state seat next fall.
Earlier this month, Murphy’s campaign launched its toughest attack to date against Grayson, going after his business arrangements in an effort to undermine his progressive credentials. The campaign questioned whether Grayson misled voters by withholding information about the hedge funds he operates overseas from financial-disclosure forms. This came as Murphy also brought on a new spokesman from the state Democratic Party, Joshua Karp, to help lead the campaign through a long and potentially bruising messaging battle.
The focus on Grayson’s hedge funds comes after he has spent months making headlines at Murphy’s expense, on subjects from his voting record to his age.
If Murphy gets the nomination, the Democrats have to be heavily favored to win Rubio’s seat. If it’s Grayson, the Republicans will clean his clock barring some kind of Bernie Sanders progressive wave.
This is the kind of crap Grayson slings:
“He is a nothing as a congressman, he is a nothing as a human being, he is wrong on all the issues, so all he has left is to desperately try to throw dirt at me,” said Grayson.

Anything Grayson gets involved in turns ugly pretty quickly.
