I thought it was set in Asia because much of the landscape the animals traveled through looked like the Three Gorges and Zhangjiajie Mountains areas along the Yangtze River. Case in point is the below still from the movie.
I thought it was in South America because of the capybara. I think it just took references from various places so it wasnt really any one specific location.
I get a very, very faint Stray(the video game) vibe from everything I’ve seen about the film. Not plot, just L&F. Is that wildly off?
Eh? That one had lots of dialogue.
Secretary birds, for one thing, are Sub-Saharan African only. But they’re also not all-white.
Lemurs are only from Madagascar. It was very deliberately non-specific about its location.
Or it was a big zoo…
I heard about it last weekend and watched it yesterday. Stunning film. The cat was especially well animated; it behaved and moved as a real cat.
The story is a fable and does not stand up to any logical deconstruction. But that doesn’t matter. It’s not meant to be a documentary.
I can see it as a story of the Biblical flood for animals not taken on the ark.
My cat too! First time I witnessed him paying attention to the television screen. He was right up next to it then snagged a comfy chair and positioned himself to watch it. So weird!
I haven’t been watching the Oscars, nor have I seen the movie yet, but I did see that this won for Best Animated Film.
A friend recommended it last week, I recorded it and finally saw it yesterday. It’s rich, enchanting and a visual treat to watch. Like @RealityChuck, I was mesmerized by the cat’s movements, which were so perfectly… cat like.
I loved it and will probably watch it at least a couple more times to soak up more nuance. I think if someone watches it without expectations, they will be charmed and moved on at least some level.
We watched it a couple of weekends ago after hearing an interview with the director on NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday. I definitely need to watch it again. Glad to hear it won the Oscar!
I signed up for Hulu/MAX just to see this, and did so last night! Everyone’s right - it’s wonderful.
My own cat ignored it, but that didn’t surprise me at all.
I forgot to mention – my dachshund went insane watching it! Barking, singing, dancing, whining, dashing around the corner of a wall to see if he could join the animals from that approach.
In short, it drove him nuts. In a good way. Made watching it even more fun!
we watched FLOW this past weekend and loved it - as did one of our cats. Loved the world, the dreamlike look of the environment, the just-cartoony-enough characters. At times the camerawork got a little close to that of a first-person video game, but it never felt like a cut scene. People are going to be talking about this film for a while. ROBOT DREAMS is also great, but in totally different ways!
