jally - I visited the site you mentioned and my personal opinion is that it makes the posts too hard to read, and also it adds little value to a message board. People reading the thread can make their own decisions on the value of a particular post.
You also say “I counted 14 posts after the O.P. above. Not one answer to the original Q.”
Out of those 14 posts, 5 were posts made by you (including a double-post you made), so I would suuggest that a more precise way of expressing your idea would have been “I counted 9 posts by other people after the O.P. above. Not one answer to the original Q.”
If it makes you feel better, I was going to make a smart ass reply to your GQ question regarding cherry juice, but as it involved a completely tasteless pun involving the correspondance between maintaining one's cherry and birth control pills, I said to myself, "Hmmm, this poster clearly has a Miss Grundy complex. Let's bag it." Now aren't you happy?
I think I agree with Chrono's assessement. You're frustrated by the linear thinkers, and you're frustrated by the people who are fascinated with word play and/or ideas and who cause a thread to diverge in various directions. Um, why are you here? If you want straight medical data, go to Medline.
There’s a very simple reason that nobody answered your profile question, jally. To put it simply, we don’t know. Does that satisfy you? Or would you rather have all 14,000 members come in here and say that they don’t know either?
First of all, you don’t know that until it’s tried & either proven or disproven. Yea, yea… I know… “the burden of proof is on me” as SDMBers are fond of saying. No matter to me. It will still come in very handy if ever I should receive uncalled-for responses in future. It’s much simpler & less time-consuming to cite my site, than debating deviants who will always either twist the truth, quote out of context, or omit the whole truth. So if any perverts try to get their kicks in future, they might as well know, it’ll fall flat. They’ll just have to pick their pickins’ via some other sucker for apoplexy.
I won’t bother to respond to that, because your response (re: clutter) is obviously illogical, as anyone who analyzes the feature would understand.
However, despite your many sarcastic comments to me which had been very judgmental, since you don’t even know my medical background, I did offer you a conciliatory explanation in that cherries post. I actually do understand, believe it or not, how you might be pissed off about my assertions that mere food can have such a radical effect. Perhaps we’ve been at cross-purposes, but I did resent your disbelief, and it would be well advised (if you believe in karma ;)) to be less quick to judge in future. Has it occurred to you that I might have wished to be informative for anyone who might have experienced bleeding problems? Believe it or not. And because my intentions had been good, your comments served to intensify my frustration. Can you please try to understand my position - even though it may not be in your linear nature to do so?
do you have a comprehension problem? I certainly was not sarcastic in my first response to you - I genuinely do think that most gynaecologists know nothing about herbal medicine. After all, they didn’t study herbal medicine but studied allopathy.
You probably would have found that if your post had included a bit of background info, some of us might have been a bit more restrained. But YK there was a distinct odour of us not being allowed to give any answer except the precise one you wanted to hear.
I like these boards. I like the OT and I like the sense of fun which is here.
I don’t like being called perverse, illogical and deviant because I didn’t respond in the manner you required. I’m curious though. Is it possible to be both illogical and a linear thinker? I wouldn’t have thought so.
A final question? Did you design the page you keep linking to? Has any board anywhere actually used your idea? What were the repercussions? Did it work at all? I think you’d have more luck herding cats than reforming this board to your specifications
 Someone poke me when this gets to the Pit. Or just search for some of my comments from the last time jally was active a year or so ago. Thanks.
Who me? a flamer? I’m just a nice l’il gal. Far as I’m concerned, this subject is now closed, even if I get more e-notifications. So I hereby transfer the disco floor to y’all. Have a ball!
But before I try something I would want to have convincing reasons to try it. At first glance the idea you propose seems to me to lack in value and in addition make the posts harder to read, so why should I try it? That is why it would be up to you to convince me.
A post saying “your poor reasoning skills don’t bother me” seems to contradict itself when the statement is accompanied by insults.
This response is: [ul]
[1]Gibberish
[2]Smarmy
[3]Just Plain Dumb
[4]Ignores the Facts
[5]All of the Above
[/ul]
I’ll chose option 5 again!
This is fun! It allows one to insult a poster without having to actually think up something clever to say. I see why jally likes it, it seems custom designed for his/her posting skills
I think we’ve played this game with jallybefore.
I think she just enjoys bitching about something.
Interesting that she’s gone for ten months, and she’s back for barely a week before she starts whining in ATMB again.
The feature mentioned seems useful only if you suppose that people care about what the OP’s opinion of a post was. Generally, OP’s don’t rate the posts of a thread, or complain about tangents or corrections. We like discussion here, replete with anecdotes and wisecracks and all manner of extraneous information.
The feature of allowing the OP to rate posts in their thread seems contrary to the way the SDMB works. Simply put, if, when making a response, I was under any sort of obligation to provide a response that the OP wanted, I wouldn’t post nearly as much. There have been many threads here that I’ve read and enjoyed very much due to the personalities of those involved and the quality of the discussion.
The Straight Dope has never been a haven for dry, humorless, polite, on-topic answers to people’s questions.
Plus, said feature would be a pain in the ass in GD, and stupid in the Pit.
P.S. Pepperlandgirl, I knew I knew the name from somewhere. The one with all the appliance threads.
Since jally finally grasped the idea of the BBQ Pit, this thread can be closed. She’ll just have to use her new thread there for her, errr, remarks about this message board and its inhabitants. Doesn’t look like any of those observations is fitting in nicely in ATMB.
