Can you please respond to the issues in both emails to you?

Or else let SDMB provide a board where users can have civil UNLOCKED, UNINTERRUPTED dialogue with moderators, without each one jumping down the others’ throat and misjudging them.

Without vendetta’s, without cross-purpose communication.

I say this, why?

I was reading the post on GQ about Lieberman and endless repetitive BORING politics.

This led me to post the speculation about telepathy vs. speech (as an antidote to boredom).

So what happens? There’s a bug in the SDMB script; it didn’t allow for quotes. Therefore, I posted the MANNY post, and that in turn had a domino effect, where people warned me that it’s bad policy etc. etc. and when I finally wanted to respond to UncleBeer that “no” I didn’t take his response as criticism:

So what happens? I find that Manny locked the post. So then I wanted to private mail UncleBeer, but I know that SDMB doesn’t offer the PM feature. So I post another post addressed to UncleBeer. Whereupon again, somebody tells me “you could have emailed him” whereupon I respond that he better belive I would have sent a Private Message if SDMB would have offered it.

So what happens? I get a strong warning from Manny.

AND ALL BECAUSE OF THE ORIGINAL BUG, WHICH, BTW, WAS NOT INCLUDED IN FAQ.

But what Manny doesn’t know, is that I have DOUBLE frustration why? I have freenet, and today it was EXTREMELY slow, and “to boot” I often get booted off.

So, Manny, how’d you like to be in “my boots”? (forgive the pun)

And, Manny, are you on a vendetta? Do you for some reason think I’m a troublemaker? Or does SDMB in general have a policy of discrimination against right brained people? Do the moderators of SDMB enjoy keeping SDMB as a predominantly left-brained club?

Don’t get me wrong. I truly appreciate the generosity of left-brained people in providing needed facts. But I still get the feeling that anyone who doesn’t fit the “preferred mold” is discriminated against on SDMB. I don’t think this is an inaccurate assessment.

Sorry, Jally, I only get to my email once or twice a day or so (I can’t access it from work). I’ll respond to them and to this post sometime tonight or tomorrow.

You can email UncleBeer the same way you presumably did me. His email address is in a link at the top of the forum he moderates, just as mine is.

OK. In the best logical order I can manage after a 14 hour workday:

The workings of this message board are really quite simple. We have forums into which people post their thoughts. Different forums are appropriate to different kind of thoughts. The General Questions forum is for questions to which there is or reasonably might be an answer. So, yes, it is a little left-brained.

There is room in GQ for “right-brained” questions, but they generally (heh) ought to have some factual or theoretical basis from which to launch the question. Your question about what would happen if we all had telepathic powers does not fall into that category, there being no accepted scientific framework for universal human telepathy. I closed it instead of moved it because a) it had no responses and b) you specifically said you did not want a great debate. Your subsequent comment that you wanted “feedback, not responding” was cryptic enough that honestly I didn’t know what to do with the thread. You’ll note that I invited you to reword the question and repost it in an appropriate forum. MPSIMS is the right place for “Great Thoughts,” IMHO is the place to seek feedback, and Great Debates is the place for, well, Great Debates. All of this appears in the forum descriptions.

I gave you a warning in the “Uncle Beer” thread because not five Cecil-damned minutes after I closed a thread in which a moderator told you that you should not launch threads about board policies or personalities in General Questions, you did exactly that. Yes, that gets you a warning.

You ask whether the Straight Dope could offer private mail. Yes, probably, but we don’t. And we aren’t going to. For one thing, we ain’t making any money off this enterprise as it is, and we just don’t have the monetary or manpower resources to set it up and run it. Please feel free to email by conventional means any moderator or administrator, anytime, day or night. Be assured that we will respond in due course. Remember, though, that we are volunteers, with normal jobs and normal lives (well, OK, the second part there is a little iffy in my case).

Jally, there ain’t no vendettas here. It’s clear you are trying. I didn’t close any of your microwave threads; heck, I thought your oven question today was a pretty darned good one. I know you’re probably still sore that I locked the second copy of your furniture thread, but I do that whenever I see it happen. I did it the other day to a guy who re-posted a question about billiard balls, and I admonished a guy who said “I’m sure this has been discussed before” and then posted the question anyway.

There is a reason for this. The valued members of the Straight Dope Message Board, and of General Questions in particular, are a) unbelievably smart and b) easily bored. They deserve and expect a continuous stream of new, thoughtful questions, and they deserve and expect not to have their time wasted by things that do not comply with forum rules, and they deserve and expect that if they run a search, things will be where they are supposed to be. My job is to do the best I can to fulfill the membership’s expectations.

OK, I read your response, BUT i’d have appreciated if you would have quoted my above complaint, and then responded point by point.

*so what issue were you skirting? The fact that IT ALL STARTED AS A RESULT OF THE SDMB BUG OF THE QUOTES GLITCHING. And THAT made everything snowball into a case, where people kept responding to me BASED ON THEIR ASSUMPTIONS and my trying to explain, but finding the posts locked.

Another issue you skirted (and what I emailed you about) was the fact that what led me to post about telepathy vs. speech as an antidote to bordeom was THE POST ON GQ, ABOUT ENDLESSLY BORING AND REPETITIVE POLITICS.

I empathize with your 14-hour day, I really appreciate what you have to deal with, and I hope you, as well, can relate to the fact that I’m dealing freenet which is often slow & boots me, AND with limitations [genetic] which you can’t begin to imagine, but which I can email you about - IF you wish to understand my position more.

You have no authority to say who can or cannot read/post the threads you start. That’s not up to you. You also are of no authority to go so far out of line to make the above statements. Nothing that pepperlandgirl or Bear_Nenno wrote called for such a response. It’s true. If you don’t like the content of a thread or forum, read something else. No one is going to change their behavior because one person disapproves. Also, if you would like to exchange words with a moderator and only a moderator, email them. Yes, you’ve been told, I’m telling you again. You simply cannot expect that a post to a public message board will be at all private.

Jally, your remarks are inappropriate in this forum. Also, this is a PUBLIC area. Anyone can read and respond to anything you post here. If you wish to send a private message to a mod, use email. That’s why we mods and admins have our email links enabled.
