This/these.
Also, I can sleep just fine in coach when I want to.

I choose the return flight - one more thing to look forward to.
Outbound probably. I want to be relaxed when I get there. I’ll be looking forward to going home no matter what.
This is pretty much exactly what I was going to write.
I’ll take the first class upgrade on the outbound flight.
I don’t fly a lot, though I have been on enough flights to be familiar with flying coach. Much as I might like first class, its not something I expect I’ll ever get used to and I wouldn’t want to have to wait until the end of my trip to enjoy the experience. Plus, you never know what’s going to happen between leaving and returning, so might as well take advantage of the offer right away.
Definitely the return trip. As others have mentioned, the anticipation of the vacation will help get me through the experience of Coach. Coming home all I have to look forward to is work.
Allow me to plus 1 on the return trip for all the reasons already stated.
Return, definitely. I’m the type of guy that wants to return a day early from vacation in order to rest before returning to work, and so riding business class on the return contributes towards this relaxation greatly.
Plus if you have souvenirs or requests to bring back cheap stuff from the USA back to China, you get an extra checked bag in business class, and 32 kg instead of 23 kg.
On the way out. I generally waste the first day after arrival just trying to get comfortable after the trip. In a strange place, wrong mattress, wrong pillows, new food, etc. it can be tough to find rest and equilibrium. If I arrived comfortable, I’d have that much more fun time on the vacation.
Arriving at home, comfort is easy to regain because I’m climbing into my own bed, etc.
Well I currently take Southwest so…but if I have enough money (and I will with my next job), I’m probably going for both. I have to pick one? I’ll pick return. If I’m heading back to work, I don’t want to be roughed up in coach.
Eastbound is generally better, as originally pointed out by Mr Downtown. That said, if I’m doing a vacation where I’m trying to stretch it to the last second before returning and I need to get up early for work the next day, I might opt for the relaxation from 1st Class on the way home, regardless of direction.
Red eye. If there are none, then the way back.
