Folk Wisdom: Stepping on a needle

Is it true that stepping on a sewing needle with bare feet can result in the needle being pulled into the blood stream, eventually causing death when it reaches the heart, or was this just an Urban Legend spread to make little girls pack away their sewing equipment carefully?

While it is theoretically possible for any foreign body which enters the human body to enter the circulatory system, and travel via the venous system thru the right heart and into the lungs, it is unlikely in the extreme.

In the rare case where it has happened, it’s generally from a bullet which ends up in a large vein.

The sewing needle qualifies as an urban legend.

Thanks, Doc!
