Fonzie's Music

Hi,

Does anyone know the type of music or specific artists a Fonzie-type might have listened to? You know, the disenchanted, libidinous, non-conformist, disrespectful, often unguent contingent of our population that incidentally gave the most wedgies and swirlies. And don’t forget Pinkie Tuscadero. Was James Dean really the tops with them?

Also, what’s happened to these guys? Where are they living/lurking? Look for 60s, early 70s.

Ayyyyyyyyyyy.

Mr. B

I seem to recall him being pretty impressed with Weezer that time they played at Al’s restaurant.

You mean age, right?

Not everybody was a beatnik, or a hippy, or a punk, or a goth, or a flapper, or a … help me out here…

They still have the same haircut and wear the same rolled-cuff jeans. It’s sad.

Guys, why not save your smartass remarks for MPSIMS or The Pit, 'cause in General Questions we actually like to try and answer questions, not make fun of them.

I’ll even show you how:

Back in the 1950’s guys who dressed like The Fonz, leather jackets, jeans, boots T-shirts, etc., listened to rock n’ roll and R&B.

Rock n’ roll in this case would mean Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, & the other usual suspects.

I think a lot of “Fonzie” types would have been into New York and Philly Doo Wop/Soul as well as the basic early Memphis rock and roll. Dion and the Belmonts, Dell Vikings, Frankie Lymon, and the Platter’s And into the early 196o’s, maybe Phil Spector type “Brill Building” music - they might have been tough but they appreciated a good slow song that a pair could neck to. Also the ‘hot rod’ genre of the early 1960’s would have been popular.

The Beatles onslaught would have left them rather confused (too English, too effeminate, and too cheery for their taste), and forget about Bob Dylan or Joan Baez. The Rascals and Righteous Brothers, or Stax-Volt (Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding) would have held their interest.

An album with Fonzie-approved music titled Fonzie Favorites was put out in 1976, with Fonzie himself on the cover.

The tracks were:
1 Happy Days Theme
2 Charlie Brown – The Coasters
3 Splish Splash – Bobby Darin
4 Bird Dog – The Everly Brothers
5 You Talk Too Much – Joe Jones
6 Barbara Ann – The Regents
7 Great Balls of Fire – Jerry Lee Lewis
8 Rock Around the Clock – Bill Haley
9 The Fonzarelli Slide – Frank Lyndon
10 The Fonz Song – The Heyettes
11 Impressionist Track (Aaaaay, Cool, Nerd, Sit On It)
12 Could This Be Magic – The Dubs
13 I Only Have Eyes for You – The Flamingos
14 Tears on My Pillow – Little Anthony & the Imperials
15 Maybe – The Chantels
16 Little Star – The Elegants
17 Million to One – Jimmy Charles
18 In the Still of the Night – The Five Satins
19 Silhouettes – The Rays
20 Since I Don’t Have You – The Skyliners
21 Heart and Soul – The Cleftones
22 Ya Ya – Lee Dorsey

Does anyone know any former street toughs like Fonzie? It would be interesting to see how they turned out as old men – what did they do with their lives? Did they fight in Vietnam? Do they like the world now?

Mr. B

My parents grew up during that time. Thety said that there were pretty much just two social groups in their high school years, as opposed to the many sub-cultures we have now. There was the “collegiate crowd,” whether they went to college or not, and the “hoods,” which were the Fonzie types. Most of 'em, my folks said, ended up as auto mechanics.
