Food Fadists - STFU

Not to belabor the point, but have you tried low-carb, high-fat, moderate protein? I definitely notice that carbs are not my friend when it comes to helping the vitamin D work.

Kindly butt out, since you have nothing of value to add to this side conversation.

Granted.

Long-term side effects on recently-patented medications is my big concern. As an example, if someone needs some amphetamine salts (Adderall) for their ADHD, fine. We know that drug well, it’s been around for a long time.

What I find completely bewildering is how people can just jump on board the latest anti-depressant like it’s a magic bullet. Who knows what that might be doing to your brain, long-term? Nobody…it has no real track record to speak of. And there are other ways to cure mild depression.

What I’m really interested in is the OTHER possible effects that vitamin D might have for other annoying little symptoms you might have…It got rid of things I never even thought could be gotten rid of, when I started it. Since we both have immune disorders (that are probably partially genetic), I reason/surmise that you might have other problems that are being caused by your genetic immune issues. Lowering the carbs and increasing the fat might be the thing that would help it have an effect. But, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.

In some cases, it IS a magic bullet. It might mean the difference between life and death. Sure, there might be side effects, but when the choice is to give the patient something that will allow him/her to live long enough to get those side effects, or to take the chance that the patient will commit suicide without the meds…

And I don’t think that you realize how debilitating long term depression might be, even “mild” depression. If a patient doesn’t think that s/he’ll EVER get better, EVER feel like living, then what’s the point?

I’ve been on anti-depressants. They saved my life. I’m off of them now, and yes, I did suffer side effects from them. But the benefits vastly outweighed the side effects, and it was up to me and my doctor to determine whether or not the drugs were appropriate for me.

Mild depression would not result in suicide, by my definition.

I’m not saying they haven’t helped some people. Sure they have. Some even probably don’t get any side effects. But they also get way over-prescribed, to people who don’t need them, and that’s fucked up.

I guess my point is, if you’re able to function, and not planning to harm yourself or others, there are generally better methods.

Sorry, you have no power to silence me. I’ll say what I want, when I want, when I feel I have something to say.

Are you a psychiatrist? A psychologist, even? Or is this another area where you are self-taught and have cherry-picked your references to support your pre-conceived notions?

Well, feel free to demonstrate your ignorance in this area as well.

FFS. I have tried every combo of macronutrient combiniation and vit D. I don’t feel better that way.

I feel better with what I am doing right now and a low dose of the correct medication.

Chances are, you aren’t taking the ‘latest and greatest’ anti-depressant if you have mild depression. Chances are, you have pretty serious depression and the other ones didn’t work.

Nanny-nanny boo boo, stick my head in poo-poo? Are you really taunting?

I couldn’t care less, but are you saying that anti-depressants aren’t over-subscribed? I can name at least 4 friends right off the top of my head who were prescribed them for no good reason. One of them had SERIOUS negative reactions to Paxil. He didn’t even need an antidepressant.

I don’t even know what to say. What ‘references’ do I need here? Threadshitter. Who are you, anyway? Why can’t you let it go? Leave me alone, I have no interest in you.

Yes, we must live in very different realities, since I’ve rarely known anyone who spend good money on something and then neglected it. I suppose rich people do that, but I don’t know any of them!

Then it wouldn’t be a Pug. A smooth haired toy dog with a longer snout would be a Chihuahua.

WTF?

Why in the world would you think that? Pugs do just fine without any surgery, much less massive reconstructive surgery. Same with me - I snore and I’ll never be a distance runner, but I can breathe.

How much is a little more snout? I assume you also want to make all Pekes into Tibetan Spaniels? Boxers into Dobermans? etc. Because you’ve been told that any dog with a pushed in face must be suffering, you believe it and demand that breeds that have been that way for decades must change right now. If you want to work towards better lives for dogs, start with areas where they are actually suffering, like in puppy mills.

I never said it wasn’t, I said that you cannot possibly know that it’s more likely a GSD will be dysplastic than a mutt, because no one is going around x-raying mutts. You are stating a fact for which there is no proof, simply because you don’t like show bred Shepherds or something.

As I said, show bred GSDs can do all that and more. Here is an ad for a show bred dog who is an agility champion and has a herding title on sheep, among other titles. And here is another ad for a show bred dog with advanced agility titles and also a herding title. Obviously, these dogs have sloping backs, tho that is more a result of the way they are set up for the show ring, who can do the work for which the breed was originally developed, walking normally and playing, as well as much more.

Those two ads came from one issue of a magazine devoted to GSDs - I’m sure there are plenty more examples out there, I just looked thru what I could easily put my hands on.

Again, I was speaking of genetic health. The “purebreds” in pet stores frequently don’t even have clean pedigrees so they are essentially as unknown genetically as a mutt from a shelter.

You didn’t have to pay money for the dogs from the shelter? Shoot, when we got the cat over 12 years ago, she cost about $100.

A mutt can be a good pet, but for those of us who like to do dogsports, they are just as big a crap shoot for that as they are genetically. And since you didn’t take your mutts in for the sort of health checks that breeding stock get, you don’t know if that deaf and blind dog was the result of an on-going genetic problem or not - I’ve had three dogs go past 16 and none of them (or any of my dogs) were blind or deaf.

These mutts didn’t have arthritis? Did you autopsy them after they died? Without going in and looking, you just can’t know what sort of genetic issues they may have had, and that is why the assumption that mutts are healthier is based on zero hard facts.

I’m not sure how we got to this from the genetics of allergies in humans.

Excuse me? You haven’t been putting up long posts on the subject?

Actually, if you take a look at your post #562, it appears you are the one that sidetracked to dogs, and then you had no trouble continuing. Way to take responsibility for your actions.

See, if you want an example of you being wrong, here’s one now. The above is just not true. About 3 minutes of searching an academic database gave me:

Orthopedic diseases of hind limbs in dogs (2011)
“Considering the dogs with hip dysplasia […] the most common breed was the German shepherd (21.6%) […] while the mixed-breed dogs were 15.7% of total.”

Prevalence of canine hip dysplasia in a veterinary teaching hospital population (2005)
“German Shepherd % dyplastic: 32.9, mixbred dogs % dysplastic: 17.7.”

Reference to: Breed susceptibility for developmental orthopaedic diseases in dogs (2002)
“LaFond et al (2002) reported varying increased risks of hip dysplasia across different breeds to a maximum of approximately ten times that found in mixed-breed dogs.”

No links because these are limited-access journals, but the science suggests that hip dysplasia really is more common in German shepherds (and some other breeds) than in mutts. You can’t just sweepingly say that there is absolutely no proof for that based on two anecdotal incidences of German shepherds who apparently look ‘normal’ to you. Now I’m going to admit right now that I didn’t read these articles closely at all because I can’t be bothered putting that kind of effort into this stupid argument, but it was easy to find, without looking very hard at all, articles all about something that you insist that no one is doing.

No, sir, I’m saying you have no authority to tell me to shut up and go away. Only a moderator can do that.

If you don’t care why are you (apparently) interested enough to keep posting about it?

Once again, the plural of anecdote is not data.

Unless you are an appropriately trained doctor you are not qualified to evaluate if your friends need antidepressants or not. Your friends may or may not wish to confide in you in regards to their mental distress. It is not unknown for depressed people, even severely depressed ones, to maintain a cheerful facade but that’s all it is, a facade. Yes, some people have bad reactions to a particular medication. The appropriate response is to discontinue it and/or find an alternative, not to condemn the medication. And, again, unless you are appropriately trained AND the confidant of the person in question you are in no way qualified to make a judgement in this matter.

You have no interest in me but keep replying?

I can’t let it go because you are spreading inaccurate information, and disinformation, even to the point of telling people to turn their back on actual medical care in favor of your diet-and-supplement snake oil.

You’re not a doctor. You’re not a scientist. You’re just some random person whose read some stuff on the internet and now think you’re a world authority on a complex biological and medical subject.

Leave you alone? The more you tell me to shut up and go away even as you continue to spread your bad and potentially dangerous “advice” the less inclined I am to do so. You came here, you were challenged to defend your position, and you did a piss-poor job of it. Now you’re crying because you were called out on it.

Your often-repeated opinion that those who are, in your eyes, genetically defective shouldn’t reproduce is eugenics. You didn’t know that?

What’s with the opposition to snake oil? The federal government must have initiated a conspiracy to prevent its spread to the populace! There’s no way they could be doing something to aid the people… snake oil is John Galt!

Because Alsatians weren’t running Auschwitz.

Moderators: can we please close this thread now I think it has served its purpose to show that:

  1. Food Fadists should shut the fuck up
  2. They won’t

Interesting article from the AP today:

Is Your Problem Gluten? Or Faddish Eating?

By you even writing that, six people just convinced themselves they are allergic to lightning.
