  4. ‘Gravy Train’ – the students’ less-than-complimentary name for a scoop of mashed potatoes, topped with a ladle-full of brown gravy containing chunks of the infamous ground-up ‘Mystery Meat’. Usually accomoanied by a serving-spoonful of cut green beans or peas and carrots.

Before my school district transitioned to real slices of pizza, they served pizza burgers. Not really enjoyed by the hot lunchers, I never had one because I always brought my lunch.

My senior year in HS I worked in the cafeteria, handing out the cartons of milk that went along with the school lunch (which, as I recall, cost around fifty-five cents in 1972, or you could get a 10-punch card for $5.00). Our school enrolled over 1500 so we ate in two shifts, and the administration rigged it so that I and the other student helpers used our study hall period so we’d be available to work both shifts. We got free lunch daily for ‘volunteering’, and on the days when we had chili, I always was able to get a double portion!

Incidentally, we never saw any “Animal House”-style food fights.
